Forty-two-year-old John Smoltz is back in the National League after an emarrassing quarter season with the Boston Red Sox.
The aging former Brave signed with the St. Louis Cardinals today, but there is not much indication how the Cardinals plan to use him.
Smoltz didn’t look good at all in Boston, and many saw a guy who had nothing left on the mound after several major surgeries.
But, like many ball players, he still wants to play and he cannot walk away from the game.
I suspect the Cardinals may try to use Smoltz in relief because I doubt he can pitch 5 or 6 innings well anymore.
