Bobby Cox Will Coach One More Year

Atlanta Braves coach Bobby Cox got a one-year contract extension to coach next year before he retires.

But I have to ask why?

Although the Braves seem to be climbing back into contention after years of struggling, it’s not really because of Cox. At least not in my opinion.

The Braves were lucky enough to finally get an ace from their farm system in Tommy Hanson. That sure helps. The management also made some risky, but smart free agency moves, namely with strike out and innings king Javier Vazquez.

But why does Cox feel as if he needs to endure one more year in the dugout? He’s won a pennant. He’s made the playoffs more than a dozen years in a row. And the team played in some of the most exciting world series ever.

One more year? Really?

I was really hoping for a new coach to take the helm in 2010, so he could as quickly as possibly acquaint himself with the young guys who will soon be leading this team.
