Will Braves Sign Johnny Damon?

The Atlanta Braves are considering adding Johnny Damon to the outfield if the price is right, according to the AJC.

But the Braves organization flatly denies any interest in the Yankee outfielder. But FOXSports also says the Braves and the Tigers are considering signing Damon to a contract.

Damon lives in Orlando and the Braves have spring training near his residence. So do the Tigers. And both teams are on the East Coast.

Adding Johnny Damon would fill a gap for the Braves. He’s a decent outfielder with some power. I guess the decisions depends a lot on whether the Braves plan to have Jason Heyward start the season in the outfield, which I do not think is the smartest thing to do.

The value of the 36-year-old outfielder has dropped considerably, so it is conceivable that the Braves could sign him to just a one or two year deal to give Heyward more time to blossom. You don’t want to bring up a prospect too early and have him play poorly, which can ruin a player’s psyche.

Damon still hit 24 home runs (which tied his highest in his career) and had more than 80 RBIs for the Yankees last season, which would be great for the Braves. He also would be a solid lead-off hitter, although he only had 12 stolen bases last year.

I am not sure for how cheap Damon can be had, but general manager Frank Wren has to make a bid.
