Braves to retire Tom Glavine’s number in August

Not so much a surprise move but on the past Tuesday the Atlanta Braves announced that they would honor Tom Glavine to retire his #47 jersey and induct him into the Braves Hall of Fame at a ceremony on August 6th. The Jersey retirement will be held pre game before the Braves take on the San Francisco Giants. Glavine was a poster child of the Braves through their run in the 90’s and Bobby Cox saw him every step of the way. When asked about Glavine Cox replied:

"“He meant a lot to this organization,” said Braves manager Bobby  Cox, who praised the 305-game winner’s toughness and precision pitching. “All those years he pitched he never went on the disabled list till right at the very end. Great competitor.“He can pitch hurt. Sore shoulder, sore elbow, bad ankle, bad knee, bad ribs … you name it, he did it. Amazing.”"

Team President and former General Manager John Schuerholz also chimed in on Glavine:

"“Tom has been, and continues to be, a very special part of the Atlanta Braves organization,” team president John Schuerholz said.  “There’s no greater honor than inducting him into our Hall of Fame and making sure his Braves uniform number 47 is retired and finds its rightful place alongside other great Braves Hall of Famers.”"

Glavine will be the seventh Braves player to have their uniform number retired. He will be joining Hank Aaron, Eddie Matthews, Warren Spahn, Dale Murphy, Phil Neikro, and Greg Maddux. Perhaps next season John Smoltz and Bobby Cox will both be joining in the festivities.

In his career with the Braves and the Mets Glavine won 305 games. He won 244 of them with the Atlanta Braves and is a 10 time National League All Star and a two time National League Cy Young Award recipient. He will no doubt be a first ballot Hall of Famer and should go down as one of the best left handed pitchers in the history of Baseball.
