7/20: Braves Minor League Recap

Scranton/WB 6, Gwinnett 1
Todd Redmond: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Scott Proctor: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB
Barbaro Canizares: 1-3, RBI
Freddie Freeman: 1-4, 2B

Redmond served up two home runs to Jesus Montero. Otherwise he pitched well, giving up one double and three singles and only walking two. Ivan Nova shut the Gwinnett offense down, with only an RBI single from Canizares in the first inning as the lone run. Freeman doubled ahead of Canizares and scored the run.

Mobile 6, Mississippi 5
Brandon Beachy: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Juan Abreu: 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, K
Mauro Gomez: 4-5, 2B, RBI

A wild finish in Mobile resulted in a 6-5 loss for Mississippi. A double and homer resulted in two of Beachy’s three runs allowed. A sac fly brought home the other. Otherwise, Beachy pitched great, continuing to strike batters out at a high clip. Abreu pitched a scoreless eighth but didn’t record an out in the ninth, allowing two runs on a double, triple, and single to blow the game. Abreu has given up four runs in his last three innings, including five walks. It’s his second blown save for Mississippi. The runs were scattered for the Braves, but Gomez picked up four of their ten hits.

Myrtle Beach 5, Wilmington 4
J.J. Hoover: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 5 K
Jordan Kreke: 1-2, HR, RBI
Samuel Sime: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI

The Pelicans won in the most unusual fashion, walking off on a balk. Michael Jones doubled to lead off the ninth and pinch runner Cole Miles reached third on a sac bunt. The reliever then balked to bring home the winning run. Hoover’s two earned runs allowed came from a home run, but the rest of the hits were singles and he walked just one. After struggling throughout June, Hoover has turned the corner in July, allowing just four earned runs in 25 innings and walking three while striking out 29.

Lexington 3, Rome 1
Cory Rasmus: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
Jeffrey Lorick: 2 IP, 4 BB, K
Jake Hanson: 2-4, HR, RBI
Joe Leonard: 2-4, 2B

Rasmus pitched well for Rome, with an error causing his first run after allowing a double, his second run scoring after a few singles, and the third run scoring due to walks. It’s a solid effort for Rasmus, who hasn’t had much luck with singles and the defense behind him lately. Rome couldn’t get much going on offense, with Hanson’s home run being the only run. Edward Salcedo went 0-4 with a strikeout and is down to .212.

Pulaski 8, Danville 1
Willie Kempf: 8 IP, 3 H, ER, 8 K
Evan Gattis: 1-1, RBI

Kempf gave up a first inning run on a single and double, but dominated Pulaski after that for seven shutout innings with no walks. He has allowed three runs in 21 innings for Danville. Matthew Lewis had a meltdown in the ninth, allowing all eight runs, though only two were earned due to an error by himself, followed by a grand slam. He also walked five in the inning.

GCL Braves 9, GCL Pirates 8
Daniel Falcon: 3-5, 2 RBI
Cory Brownsten: 2-4, 2 RBI
Matt Lipka: 2-5, RBI
Cody Johnson: 2-3, RBI

The Braves slugged their way to a win over the Pirates. Lipka stole two bases and is now 8-10 in stealing. That makes management jump up and down in their beds at night. Johnson had a good day in his second rehab start. Not to be left out is Brandon Drury, who went 2-4 with a double and triple.

DSL Blue Jays 2, DSL Braves 1
Jesus Saldeno: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K
Bruno Tovar: 3-4, 2B, RBI

Since allowing five runs in a two-inning performance in late June, Saldeno has allowed three earned runs in his past 24 innings, with three walks and 24 strikeouts.
