Diaz Signs With Pirates For Two Years

Matt Diaz has signed a two year contract with the Pirates. Financial terms are not yet known.

This came as a surprise to me, as I thought he was headed to Philly as was widely speculated.

Apparently the Pirates have promised Matt a starting job. If Diaz shows that he can do well as an everyday player, don’t be a bit surprised to see him traded to a contender at the trade deadline for prospects. The Pirates probably need the prospects more than a veteran role player.

I wish Diaz luck except for when the Pirates go up against the Braves!

Good for Matty and the Pirates. They really need to turn it around and Matty is a start at building a good clubhouse.

I agree with that. Matt will do whatever is asked of him without any whining. The timing does surprise me, though, as I don’t see the Bucs as being very competitive this year and Diaz is usually viewed as a “finishing touches” kind of player. Who knows, though, with a full-time job he might surprise everyone!

Hurdle said today his young players have the “want To” he’s looking for players to teach them the “How To.” Dirt dog, grinder, never quit or complain guys. Matt fits that so I understand his signing. I’m not so sure about Frank’s trip to the worn out relievers bin at the Salvation Army for for George – where did that strike zone go anyway – Sherill.
