Maicer Izturis: The latest victim of Braves trade rumors

If you are any of the above then you are aware of the tons and tons of Atlanta Braves trade rumors that have been flying all over the place. The latest addition to the list is Angels infielder Maicer Izturis. DOB tweeted that Maicer Izturis could be a possibility for a Braves trade and I think he’s a solid option for a back up shortstop/utility infielder. He’s honestly a better hitter than I thought he was and exponentially better than what Alex Gonzalez was. Since we have been talking about quality versus lefties a lot here lately I wanted to check up on that as well.

Here are his splits courtesy of Fangraphs.

2011

  • vs lefties- .295/.346/.434
  • vs righties- .265/.327/.360

Career

  • vs lefties- .273/.343/.378
  • vs righties-. .276/.338/.393

2011 seems to be an outlier and we should expect him to perform the same against righties and lefties if he ends up playing shortstop everyday. These splits don’t really matter unless he is playing everyday but now you know.

Izturis is a solid player, and has a good glove at third base, shortstop, and second base which is extremely useful and even more so if Martin Prado is traded. Here is bit more on Izturis from our boys at Halo Hangout

"Maicer Izturis 3B/2B/SS – 2011 was good to Maicer Izturis. The often fragile utility man was able to stay healthy in 2011 which allowed him to appear in a career high 122 games. Maicer responded by posting a .276/.334/.388 slash line and providing a solid glove at third, short and second base. The one thing we may have learned about Izturis in 2011 is that he best suited for a utility role. Izturis is signed through the 2012 season so look for him to be back in that capacity next season."

Izturis looks like he is a nice fit for the back up SS/utility infielder we have been looking for. But we all know how Atlanta trade rumors can be…
