Spring Training is here

Finally. Baseball season is back. For the first time in what seems like ages we get to see some real baseball. None of this winter ball mess that people use to kill time and ignore basketball. Major League Baseball teams, playing other Major League Baseball teams; both of which have Major League Baseball players.

For the Braves it all starts off at 1:05 Saturday against a pretty great Detroit Tigers team. Sunday they will face off again at the same time.

This game might be a bit more interesting than most Spring Training openers for Atlanta fans because Mike Minor will be taking the mound. After his rebellious comments many Braves fans have been screaming for a trade, some have been waiting for him to back up his talk with his arm, and another group simply agree with him. Regardless of what group you are in there is no denying that there will be more pressure on Minor than usual.

Here are a few things I will be watching for this Spring:

I’m sure there are plenty more story lines out there but those are the top ones I will be interested in. It should be a great season for the Braves. Maybe a bit tighter race than most people want but it’s no fun to just dominate everyone is it? Well…

Ah, Spring Tarining games! Makes me feel like a kid again!
It’s a time when hope springs eternal and all teans are tied for first. A time when all true fans envision their team at the World Series and the dreams of lazy weekend afternoons at the ball park. A time when optimism is the ruling mantra and losers are the other teams in your division. A time when grizzled veterans return to their youth, if only in your mind, and the new kids are all veterans. A time for promise and no room for despair.
If only reality didn’t have a way of interrupting this solitude, this fantasy. If only we were all kids again and this was the most inspiring time of the year. If only our dreans could come true and there were no disappointments. But reality, that heartless bitch, shakes us from our fantasies and reminds us that we have work and family and responsibilities that deprive us of our first love, of the passion that so consumed us as children. Reality, who rips out our heart with losses and blown saves and extra inning games that interfere with our sleep. Reality, who slaps many across the face with the knowledge that their team isn’t good enough.
But still, Spring Training makes it all better, every year. The only time in a fans life where all is well with the world and we are all tied for first.
Ah, Spring Training games. Makes me feel like a kid again!
