Oakland Athletics claim Brandon Hicks from Atlanta off of waivers

Apparently the Athletics have stolen Brandon Hicks from the Atlanta Braves, claiming him off of waivers according to MLBTR. I actually saw this first at Talking Chop and you can check out Gondeee’s reaction here.

This wasn’t too big of a deal for me. Brandon Hicks never really had a legit shot at making the roster in my opinion and the Braves already have Jack Wilson locked down for the utility infield spot. Wilson is better than Hicks defensively, probably at every position and Hicks hasn’t shown the ability to hit anything at the MLB level.

It’s still possible for him to become a productive Major League player but he is going to have to work on his offensive game, especially on cutting back strikeouts (7 in just 10 at bats).

Some people have brought up the fact that Drew Sutton has a better shot of making the team after this. I agree but never really saw Hicks as competition for him. At this point I will be pretty upset if Sutton doesn’t make the Opening Day roster.

As always thanks for reading. You can like Tomahawk Take on Facebook here, and follow me on Twitter here.

I’m sort of surprised he was put on waivers so early and that a face saving trade wasn’t of a nameless  A ball player but although Chipper once declared Hicks the Braves next third baseman he hasn’t shown he could be that guy. With the A’s he’ll get a chance to play and maybe that will alloqw him to grow.
