Daily Notes (8/11): Paul Maholm’s Shutout, Dan Uggla

Frank Wren has just been savvy this year hasn't he? (Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-US PRESSWIRE)

I really need to be able to watch more Braves baseball. It seems like lately I haven’t been able to watch the team play at all, and it sucks because they are doing an awesome job of it right now.

Paul Maholm’s shutout

If you knew the Braves were going to get a pitcher at the trade deadline, and in just his second start that pitcher would throw a complete game shutout, would you guess that the pitcher would be Paul Maholm?

It’s funny how baseball works isn’t it?

Well that’s what Maholm did, pitched a gem and started the series against New York off right. In 9 scoreless innings Maholm only threw 95 pitches (a bit over 10 pitches per inning if you can’t do the math) and let up 3 hits. Of those 95 pitches 64 of them were strikes and he managed to get 5 K’s in the process.

So far with the Braves Paul has pitched 16 innings in two starts and given up just 3 earned runs. He has 13 strikeouts to just 2 walks and has really done an excellent job so far.

It really seems like everything is starting to come together right now.

Dan Uggla still doing well

Speaking of coming together, Dan’s bat really came together with the ball nicely last night. Uggla hit his first home run since July 8th and to go along with pretty much every one else on the team, is doing well of late.

In his past 5 games (21 plate appearances) he is hitting .368/.429/.526. Say what you will about small sample sizes but I’m convinced that Uggla is about to go on one of his hot streaks.

Well with Uggla, he is either ice cold or red hot so… he has to be hitting the red hot streak now right?
