Live Thread: Braves Phillies (Game 2)

Live Game Thread – Braves Vs. Phillies – Game 2

I think last night’s game was the only game I’ve missed all year.  I’m on vacation.  My friends and colleagues will tell you I’ve said the word “vacation” in emails, posts, texts, and pretty much everything but a billboard sign in the last few days.  It’s just that I SO needed this time off work.  Oh well, I’ve still got a couple days left on my VACATION, but I’m more or less back to form, and ready to re-join tonight’s Live Thread for the Braves @ Phillies, Game 2.  Might be just as well I missed last night’s game.

My understanding from Fred Owens though, is that it was a good game that could’ve went either way, with a couple mistakes by both pitchers, the game just happening to go the Phillies way.  Perhaps the Braves will get some redemption tonight with Alex Wood on the mound facing Philadelphia’s Kyle Kendrick.

Both pitchers have struggled lately.  Wood gave up a season-high seven runs and eight hits in just under three innings of work in his last outing, a 7-0 shutout at the hands of Miami.  He’ll hope to get back on track.  Similarly, Kendrick will hope to improve on his last recent four game losing streak.  Kendrick has gone just 1-6 with a 6.31 ERA over his last eight games and has thrown six innings or fewer in his last nine starts.

Probables

Atlanta: Wood (3-3, 3.15 ERA)
Philadelphia: Kendrick (10-12, 4.51 ERA)

    Braves Lineup

    1. B.J. Upton (R) CF
    2. Justin Upton (R) RF
    3. Freddie Freeman (L) 1B
    4. Evan Gattis (R) LF
    5. Brian McCann (L) C
    6. Chris Johnson (R) 3B

    8. Andrelton Simmons (R) SS
    9. Alex Wood (R) P

  • cheadrick

B.J. Upton leading off. SMH aside, perhaps he can get lucky.

  • cheadrick

B.J. Upton fooled on a breaking ball. 1 out, Top 1

  • cheadrick

Justin Upton popped out. 2 Out, Top 1

  • cheadrick

Freddie Freeman, a little more adept with the bat, is battling a touch more with Kendrick.

  • cheadrick

    Count’s full on FF.

  • cheadrick

Freeman pops up much like Upton, only to the opposite field. 3 up, 3 down. 0-0 heading into the bottom of the 1st.

  • fireboss

Fredi stickin with Melvin I see _ Frediot

    • cheadrick

Yeah he’s one baffling manager at times.

  • cheadrick

Here’s to hoping Woody has better control this time out.

  • fireboss

Damn it Dan you’re playing yourself out of a job… I hope

    • cheadrick

If Dan is not somehow dismissed this off-season, and is starting in 2014, I might have to write a formal letter of protest, sacrifice a small woodland creature over an open fire, and become an alcoholic.

      • fireboss

I’d like to see him gone too but who’ll take him. Jays maybe, White Socks .. I’s like Howie Kendrick but after selling the Hanson I dunno Better get it done before DiPoto is fired

        • cheadrick

MIght just have to eat what hes owed.

          • fireboss

Oh we’ll certainly have to eat at least half of that but it’s a sunk cost. I know everyone’s all excited about LaStella’s bat but reports on his glove aren’t glowing

          • cheadrick

Yeah I’ve read the same thing, but I don’t think he makes any more errors than Uggs. Have to look at those numbers closer. Plus in AAA, he’s not getting some of the hot shots he’d get in the majors. I think if he can play some winter ball, and excel in spring, he might be the guy to consider anyway. Pickins’ slim at 2B

          • fireboss

I could stand Uggs hitting 250 or even 230 if he hit with RISP but I’ve been looking at his numbers deeper and he’s just awful,

          • cheadrick

Yeah I just smh all year when some people would defend him on his OBP and walks. When you’re paid what he’s paid, that’s not enough.

          • fireboss

Walks are only theoretically as good as hits. If the guys behind you are outs you are supposed to put the ball in play with authority for 13million a year

          • cheadrick

            Agreed

  • cheadrick

Uggla manages to not bobble, and throws to FF on a routine grounder for 1 out.

  • fireboss

    easy inning — Thank you

  • cheadrick

Gattis anxious, turns on that pitch too quickly

  • cheadrick

Is Evan becoming Ugglaish in his inability to hit the breaking ball? lol

    • fireboss

He was fooled on the first one and anxious on the second

  • cheadrick

Liberal zone, but too close to take. Good movement on KK’s pitches tonight.

    • fireboss

I’d want the McCann K pitch for Woody

  • cheadrick

Looks like Philly might have a good young player in Cody Asche.

    • fireboss

I like the way Asche plays thrid

      • cheadrick

HIs AAA bat was pretty hot too

        • fireboss

There’s research that says there is a correlation to AAA numbers but of course it’s just a stat

          • cheadrick

Outside of a hiccup early in rookie ball, his bat was pretty consistent through the minors, and while he may not stay up, he got the nod early. His move up has been fast

  • cheadrick

Jordan Schafer is healthy isn’t he?

    • fireboss

      Yep

  • cheadrick

Something appears slightly “odd” with Wood’s delivery tonight. I have a kind of photographic memory with those kinds of things, and he’s doing something different. Cannot put my finger on it just yet.

    • cheadrick

Or maybe I’ve had 1 too many beers.

  • fireboss

And Melvin looks at a good strike and complains. I dunno. I like being right but this one is going to be around for 4 more sad years

    • cheadrick

Yeah, sadly he is owed too much. BUT… I disagree with clubs playing bad players just cuz they’re paid highly. If I got a better CF, I would play him…. and wait… we do! :)

  • cheadrick

I look at ole Prado’s performance this year, and I just cry that we didn’t keep him, and cry further over what we got in return. Yes, Prado is better than Justin. Only good thing outta that was CJ.

    • fireboss

Prado had a good July and August his first half wasn’t great but that’s the transition. I projected 4 @44 would get him Wren offered him a LOT less then traded him and the DBacks gave him 4 @44. I like Justin. I wanted and still want Justin. The joker in the deck was Wren falling in love with Melvin and wasting his money there. We could have gotten JUP for a bigger package of lesser players

      • cheadrick

I’ll take a career .293 hitter who can play almost any position well, any day. But that’s just me.

  • cheadrick

    Freddie. HIGHLY underrated player

  • cheadrick

What baffles me is Fredi playing who he plays at times, and the lineup he plays, knowing that every game is important! 2.5 lead over LA can dwindle just like that.

    • fireboss

I think Fredi’s trying to jump start BJ.. he needs a bigger battery

      • cheadrick

Well wake the (**^*&^% up Fredi!

        • fireboss

I suspect he’s being directed to do so

          • cheadrick

Yeah I wouldn’t doubt that, and GMs that micro manage will eventually show their cards. Wren’s days, I think, “should” be numbered. I think he makes too many management mistakes.

          • fireboss

GMs and managers of division winning teams rarely get fired

          • cheadrick

            Thus the “should”

  • fireboss

I saw Billy Hamilton stole a base in each of his first four major league games. That’s a record and makes the Reds a different team

    • cheadrick

Yea, he’s a demon on the paths. He set a minor league record for steals as I recall. Nice addition.

      • cheadrick

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Reds jumped up and took over their division soon.

        • fireboss

Their pitching consistency needs to improve to do that

          • cheadrick

Speaking of pitching consistency… our needs to improve as well, lately anyway

          • fireboss

as I noted Ale’s second time around the league is exposing him and doesn;t have the experience to work around that. He’s getting tired too just looking at him on the bump

  • fireboss

Catcher in left threw to the wrong base

    • cheadrick

Haha. He’s a slow learner defensively it seems.

  • fireboss

Alex’s second time around the horn is starting to expose him and he’s tiring

    • cheadrick

Yeah, I’m not the fan Julien is. I mean I just have issues with his mechanics long term, and I truly think we brought him up and have had him throwing too much.

      • cheadrick

Not that our choices were unlimited.

  • cheadrick

All this talk lately of a faster return for Jhey than first thought…. I still have major doubts about that, but I hope I get pleasantly surprised. I just cannot imagine him being very effective even if he does. It’s not like Jhey is a a marquis offensive juggernaut anyway.

    • fireboss

He was in the leadoff spot. People expect there to be no after effects ans that’s just not reasonable

      • cheadrick

It can happen. I’ve seen quick comebacks from injury before, but people shouldn’t get their hopes up, and neither should Jhey. I would much rather see JS leading off if Jhey is “questionable”.

  • cheadrick

Well it’s the Chris and Fred show again. I mean come on guys! You’re watching the game aren’t you? Is it that hard to have a laptop nearby? I know you got one! lol

  • fireboss

Kendrick owns us 7-2 3.20 ERA 778 winning % against everyone he’s 4.34 534 wp always that one guy

    • cheadrick

Yeah must be mental. Of course, his last few outings have been awful, so maybe it’s just wait – I don’t have any good hitters tonight. ;)

  • cheadrick

I’m sitting in my man cave in the dark, drinking beer. I could at least get up and turn on some lights. Is this the beginning of my own regression? lol

    • fireboss

I got a laptop with a keyboard that lights up so I don’t have to get up and if I want the light I can stand up and get the one on the wall so I;d say no not yet

  • fireboss

That looked like an awfully good pitch

  • cheadrick

C’mon Beeeeeeej. Try not to let the wind from the pitch blow your skinny ass off the plate.

  • cheadrick

Told you what we saw recently from BJ was an anomaly.

    • fireboss

      Never thought otherwise

      • cheadrick

Shoulda said, “Told folks”, not “Told you”. I knew you knew it. haha

  • fireboss

    Kendricks Ks last 11 games 2,2,7(mets),1,0,4,3,1,2,3 Tonight 8 after 5 innings…#WTF

    • cheadrick

I’d like to see his scatter charts. Be willing to bet it’s just Braves batting.

      • cheadrick

Although, his breaking ball looks clearly on point tonight. Don’t know if it was in his recent outings. And that change…

        • fireboss

He’s the kind fo guy that gives us fits, breaking balls, change ups pitches backwards a lot and we are a FB hitting team who doesn’t adjust

          • cheadrick

That’s true. KK has pretty good command of 4 pitches when he’s on, and he really mixes em up well.

  • cheadrick

I’ve been saying for about 3 years prior to this – Phillies are getting old, and their days are numbered. True dat.

    • fireboss

They have a couple of bad contracts, Howard $25M a yearnot worth close to that

      • cheadrick

        Yeah sooo injury prone now.

  • fireboss

    Telegraphing that change a bit…

  • cheadrick

Good play off the wall by Gattis at least.

    • fireboss

Nearly a one handed home run —softball field

  • cheadrick

Braves just not pitching well right now, period

    • fireboss

      Minor was masterful last night.

      • cheadrick

Yeah I started to reply to my own post. Didnt see the game (only one Ive missed all year), but I looked at his numbers. Good to see him back on track. I think he’s clearly our #1

        • cheadrick

          K’d 9 didn’t he?

          • fireboss

            yep 9 ks 1 walk

        • fireboss

Looked as good as Lee last night. Medlen is coming back and Teheran will be ok but Woody’s tired and I do not trust Ayala at all at all at all

          • cheadrick

Im hoping for a NLDS sweep lol

          • fireboss

I’ve ordered some virgin goats to sacrifice just in case

  • fireboss

Woody has 72 1/3 innings with the big club and 62 in the minors. 134 innings is a lot for a drafted last year. Major league innings are different

    • cheadrick

Yeah, and just the stress alone of pitching in the bigs bothers many players, especially rookies. Mental fatigue can affect you physically.

  • cheadrick

    Good start to the 6th

  • cheadrick

Like to see a nice BMac yard

    • fireboss

I’ll drink to that or drink after the double play

  • fireboss

I wish thing thing would make a noise when a new post went up

    • cheadrick

I have a 3rd party program that dings when new Gmail arrives. Have disqus notifications set to email me, then the ding, so voila. :)

      • fireboss

I don’t read email online I get them when the mail program downloads them every 15 minutes

  • fireboss

    CJ and Freddie show

  • fireboss

Dan’s line with 2 out and a man on second 000/462/000 0-8 with 6 walks

    • cheadrick

      Now that’s clutch! haha

      • fireboss

        that’s a slipping clutch

  • cheadrick

Fred, hold down the fort if ya want. I’m still on vacation. Going out to dinner with family. Go Braves!

    • fireboss

Okey dokeyFortunately glove hand for Downs and we have an EJ sighting

  • fireboss

Fortunately glove hand for Downs and we have an EJ sighting

  • fireboss

Simba picked of f and BJ ks for the 4th time what a surprise

  • fireboss

Freddie starts the double play then Galvis gets a hit DP save at least one run

  • fireboss

Scott Downs has a non-displaced fracture of his right ring finger. This is what we used to call a hairline fracture, the bone cracks either part or all of the
way through, but does move and maintains its proper alignment.

  • fireboss

#Simba 2 ou 2-2 2 run homer ties it top of the oth

  • fireboss

And Freddy Garcia give up a Homer to Freddy Galvis and Freddie Freeman and Fredi Gonzalez watch
