Live Thread/Day Baseball! Braves/Nats 1:05 EDT

LiveThreadLogoNats

Today we’re going to be getting back to the business of baseball – still seems all too quickly after the events that unfolded yesterday morning, just a half-mile away from Nationals Park in Washington.  We continue to mourn and pray for the victims with their families, but even as thousands in that area get back to their daily tasks, we will endeavor to follow suit as the Braves and Nationals get their own game faces on to do battle – twice today.

Fox Sports South’s Tom Hart just sent an all-too-relevant tweet:

The lineup for Atlanta for Game 1 today is:

Then again… we may have to wait-and-see about what Fredi opts to do with the 2nd game’s lineup:

I saw a tweet this morning suggesting that Major League Baseball has once again denied any sort of ‘tribute caps’ to be used today.  After 9/11 the Mets and Yankees wore the hats of the local authorities to honor them and their sacrifices; apparently that practice is over (a similar request by the Nationals to honor the deaths of Seal Team 6 was denied previously).  I hope the Nationals made such a request for today (I have yet to see something official about this), and I likewise hope the request is granted.  If not, then shame on the Commissioner’s Office for doing so.  Baseball would be lauded for their support to do so – but a failure to give that honor looks bad.

That said – baseball returns today.  1:05pm EDT.

The moment of contact for the go-ahead homer: the pitch was outside and high.

PITCHING CHANGE: With 2 out in the 9th, Washington goes to Ian Krol.
Freeman is up. Reed Johnson is on deck.

Grounder ERROR AT SHORT…. Johnson Scores (Elliott)!!

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Reed Johnson batting – we’re now out of Johnsons.
Strike 1. Swinging strike 2. Strike three. END of the half-inning.

    KIMBREL TIME: BRAVES LEAD 5-3

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

We’d like to extend our thanks to the Nats for committing 2 errors during the inning to provide Atlanta with an insurance run.

    You think they’re not panicking?

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Adam LaRoche
    Wilson Ramos
    Anthony Rendon

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

LaRoche. Janish in for defense at 3rd base.

    Strike 1.
    Ball.
    Ball.
    Strike 2… fouled. 97 mph.

    Ball. 3-2 Count.
    WALK.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Ramos.
    Strike 1… strike 2…. foul… ball… ball. 2-2.
    Everything is ‘up’.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Fouled again… still 2-2 to Ramos.
    7th pitch – another foul ball (3rd).
    Grounder to Johnson… can’t make a play.

Well, it’s now ‘interesting.’ 2 out, none out. Pinch runner for Ramos. Rendon up.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Kobernus is the pinch runner.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

2-0 count to Rendon now. Kimbrel is still up with almost everything.
Ball three was _called_ strike 1.
Strike 2… lots of disagreement… gamecast calls it ‘down the middle’.
    Pop foul… another high pitch.
Ball 3 inside. Full count… that was pitch #20 from Kimbrel.

WALK – BASES LOADED. Nobody out.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

This is not a game to give away.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Ball 1 to PH Chad Tracy.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Pop up – just out of play behind McCann. Strike 1; 1-1 count.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Strike 2. The heat is going – pitches suddenly lower.
Grounder to Freddie. 3-1 on the putout.
    All runners advance.
5-4 is the score. Winning run now on 2nd base. Span is up. 1 out.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Infield will concede a tying run (!).

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Didn’t have time to type it out at the time, but with runners 2nd/3rd – walking Span seemed like the better option. Zimmerman could be doubled up; infield plays normal depth…Span is the hot hitter.

I guess they got the grounder they wanted, but …

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Ball 1. NATS WIN on Simmons error.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

1st blown save by Kimbrel in 37 attempts.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Final score: Nats 6, Braves 5.

One more game tonight at 7 eastern. I won’t be available here for that one, sorry to say. That’s a tough one to lose: definitely did NOT want to let those guys have life after they started choking themselves.

  • cheadrick

Well, if today is any clue, won’t have many if any visitors, but I’ll be here off and on for the live thread of game 2 of the doubleheader. I wasn’t able to watch today’s 1st game live, but followed on MLB AtBat, and was thoroughly disgusted. For all the talk of Kimbrel’s hiccups and Simmons error, it was really the unncessary glove flip by EJ on a slow running LaRoche that led to the loss. Enough blame to go around though.

Also, I know Dan Uggla got a hit in game 1, but I still don’t see the logic of him being in there for game 2 except for the fact it’s a Doubleheader. Other players are playing both games, so I don’t get Dan in there. He could go 4 for 4, and I’d still have little confidence in him the next game.

  • cheadrick

As good as Freddy Garcia was in his last start (surprisingly so), I have to say I had, and now have, little confidence in him for strength to get to the magic # of 2 tonight. Please, let me be wrong.

  • cheadrick

Garcia’s pitches seem widely scattered. Nats will make him pay all night if he don’t get better control.

  • Glen Morrow

Braves can we get a run ..pleasssse

    • Jeff Schafer

I’ll throw down some $$ myself for some….

  • Jeff Schafer

I don’t like how hot these Nationals are

Don’t want to rush JHey but it would be great to have him in this lineup

  • Jeff Schafer

top of the order….lets go braves

  • Glen Morrow

Rally Time Braves , time to wake those bats up.

    • Jeff Schafer

^^^^Like where your head is, time to get going!!

  • Jeff Schafer

    …and Schafer grounds to 2nd

Upton gets it going with 1 out

  • Glen Morrow

It’s time to get it done Braves

  • Jeff Schafer

    So….that offense….

  • Glen Morrow

Braves gonna have to start hitting , this is so bad .

  • Jeff Schafer

15th time being shutout this season

Magic number still sits at 4 with 11 games remaining
