Live Thread – Day Baseball: Braves vs. Cubs 9/20/13

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Greetings Baseball Fans!  It’s time for daytime baseball – and Braves fans will have a little extra spring in their step today with the surprisingly quick return of Jason Heyward to the lineup today.  Here’s the lineup (which looks almost playoff-worthy):

Weather right now at the Wrigleyville station is being reported as follows:

  • 71 to 71.5 degrees
  • Mostly Cloudy to Overcast
  • Wind from the SW at 5 to 8 mph, occasionally swinging to the South and West.  Gusts to 12 mph.
  • Humidity 79%

Sooooo what does that means:  the wind is blowing OUT:  directly toward center field and Lake Michigan.  Nobody knows this more than Paul Maholm, so let’s just hope he can keep the ball down and in the park.

Jason will be worked back in somewhat slowly:  here’s the start of the plan…

I’ll do play-by-play later… may be just a touch late due to lunch considerations.

        • cheadrick

          Fat fingers

  • cheadrick

Jordan looks like a hobo that just hopped a train illegally

    Schafer/Upton/Freeman

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Full count… after starting 3-0.

  • cheadrick

    Jordan Schafer walks. None out.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Good start – because: “walks kill”

  • cheadrick

    CB like call there ;)

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Upton showing bunt? Not seriously, I trust.

  • cheadrick

No outs, need a run, speed on 1st… not unheard of

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Cubs radio is right on this: you bunt Schafer over and Freeman gets walked.

      • cheadrick

Hope Evan makes them pay for that bit of logic

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Kevin Gregg pitching.

    • cheadrick

      Say no more

    • cheadrick

Remember when we were considering Gregg before the TD? lol

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Yeah – he was better then.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Well, now we’ll find out – grounder to SS was effectively a bunt. 1 down, runner was going, so he’s on 2nd.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      Yep. Bear on deck.

  • cheadrick

    Gattis just missing all day

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Fly out to RCF – Schafer advances. 2 out. McCann up.

  • cheadrick

    I smell a yard

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Hope so – my 10-6 prediction is still in play.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Juuuust stayed alive.

  • cheadrick

Even cubbie veterans can’t pitch inside lol

  • cheadrick

Almost as good as a yard! 6-5 Bravos

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    BRAVES LEAD

  • cheadrick

Brian McCann singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Darnell McDonald. Jordan Schafer scores. Freddie Freeman to 2nd. Two out.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Johnson!

  • cheadrick

Chris Johnson singles on a soft line drive to right fielder Darnell McDonald. Freddie Freeman scores. Brian McCann to 2nd. Two out.

  • cheadrick

Cuddyer back in 2nd place in the race to a BT

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Right – CJ now at .331 (3-4 today… everything but that triple thing).

  • Glen Morrow

Nice clutch hitting for the Braves

    • cheadrick

Nice to ride the clutch, eh?

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    ALLLMOST got to that ten-spot.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      Review time???

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Cubs radio thinks it was 5 feet foul.

        • cheadrick

It was. Bartman’s in left, and he called me on his cell. He didn’t catch it btw.

          • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

            well played.

    • cheadrick

I’ve not given up total hope on Dan. Just 98% hope

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    No review. BALL FOUR

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Simmons…. whiffs strike 1.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

2-1 Count… Gregg staying behind hitters.

  • cheadrick

Wow, Glen Morrow! Is it really true that just “knowing” Jhey is back brings the bats alive for Braves? hehe No, just bad Chicago pitching.

    • Glen Morrow

Blowing on Hand , I do what I do …lol

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    It’s NINE to FIVE

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

BJ Upton PH for …. Carpenter, who is now in line for the win.

  • cheadrick

Amazing how BJ’s look of confidence never makes you forget his actual lack of ability.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Batted around – 2-2 count to Melvin. Then reality slaps him back in the face – whiff to end the rally.

  • Glen Morrow

    BJ stikes out anyone surprised????

  • cheadrick

Ok Kimbrel, let’s not have another night like the other night when you did that thing we know you did that you rarely do dude.

  • Glen Morrow

3 outs and magic number down to only 1 game

    • cheadrick

Hopefully Turner has a great game tonight, and the Marlins help us clinch.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Kimbrel yields a single.

Outfield alignment is Upton/Upton/Schafer; Janish at 3rd.

  • Glen Morrow

    1 out left

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Pitcher’s best friend.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Darwin is awarded a chance vs. Kimbrel. Ball 1. Fly out.

BRAVES CLINCH NO WORSE THAN NL EAST TIE.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Drive Home Safely! Final score…

    ATL: 9 – 8 – 0
    CHC: 5 – 11 – 0

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Cheers all – time to go home myself.

    • cheadrick

Drive like a madman, but be safe.

  • cheadrick

I’m more interested in how a few other teams do (or may not do) than I am how the Marlins do. Clinch is going to happen, but we need to maintain that best record

    • Glen Morrow

      I agree Chris

  • cheadrick

Glen, thanks for coming and joining in on the conversation. It was all I could do to shut you up! ;)

  • Glen Morrow

well guys I am out of here got things to do ….Go Braves

    • cheadrick

      Enjoy your sandwich

  • cheadrick

Bad cubbie pitching or not, great motivator for the Braves to put more than 3.4 run avg on the board
