Live Game Thread – Braves Vs. Cubs – Game 2

The presence of Jason Heyward back in the lineup, and back in the leadoff spot for the Atlanta Braves, must have been inspiring.  The Braves seem to wake up and put a few more runs on the board than of late.  I love Jason too, but I think it was more a lack of good pitching on the part of the Chicago Cubs that woke Atlanta up.  Still, I’m pleased as punch to see Jason back in the lineup, and we should know soon whether or not he’ll get back to his pre-injury form.

Jason won’t play today, or at least won’t start.  The plan is to take it slow with Heyward, see how he does, and do everything just right to ensure he’s ready for the post-season.  Of course you know what they say about the best laid plans….

The Atlanta Braves magic number is down to 1, and a win today will clinch the NL East for the Braves, or a Washington Nationals’ loss to the Miami Marlins.  I keep saying though, the clinch is going to happen.  I’ve heard some say they want the Braves to clinch so they can relax.  What!?  No!  The best record and home field advantage is important for the Braves, so even if they clinch today, relaxing is the last thing the Braves need to do.

One thing the Braves need even more than hitting, lately at least, is better outings from all starters, and from the bullpen.  There have been entirely too many hiccups lately, and no lead seems safe even when the Braves do have it.  Kris Medlen has pitched very well lately, so look for the Braves to have another good outing from him today.  Wood has also pitched well, so don’t let his overall record fool you.  Might be a great pitcher’s duel.

Be home about 3:30ish today. Usually go out and watch game w/ friends at local watering hole on Saturdays, but going to watch from home and take part in Live Thread today. Will miss a touch of the 1st of the game. :(

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Luis Valbuena pops out to second baseman Dan Uggla. One out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Anthony Rizzo flies out to left fielder Evan Gattis. Two out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Dioner Navarro walks. Starlin Castro to 2nd. Two out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Nate Schierholtz grounds out, second baseman Dan Uggla to first baseman Freddie Freeman. Three out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

CJ singles. Laird getting some catching duties today. Bmac certainly needs some rest.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Gerald Laird called out on strikes. Two out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Dan out in front with Wood throwing sub 90 mph 4 seamers

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I still think Fredi should have Dan take a seat. If he’s going to have the sack to bench BJ, how is Dan currently different? Give EJ a chance to propel this team further than a whirlwind s/o or a walk.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Ryan Sweeney lines out softly to second baseman Dan Uggla. One out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Brian Bogusevic singles on a ground ball to right fielder Justin Upton. One out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Booing an opposing team’s pitcher making moves to 1st shows little appreciation for the purity of baseball, or any real knowledge or intelligence about the game, in my humble opinion. It’s baseball, so should be appreciated. You are sad when a pickoff move against your team is successful, but you appreciate the beauty of it because it’s baseball.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Joe, that ball wasn’t close to going out. Wind wasn’t much of a factor either. Just wasn’t hit that hard.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Kris Medlen grounds out softly, second baseman Darwin Barney to first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Two out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Fredi’s continued propensity to experiment with the lineup is sorely baffling to me. 150+ games to figure out a solid lineup, and game to game players have no level of comfort with where they’ll be hitting. Baffles old-schoolers like me.

    • fireboss

Well he didn’t want Jason against the lefty and it was a planned day off for him. Schafer’s been struggling worse against lefties. Sohe flipped a coin

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Medlen’s pitches so far: 24 Pitches: 17 Strikes, 7 Balls

  • fireboss

    Da Cubs… Thanks Nate

  • fireboss

That’s our Melvin alrighty Called out looking outside corner at the knees. Obviously has no idea where the strike zone is

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Took a laaaaate lunch break

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Brian Bogusevic strikes out swinging. Three out.
    Medlen eating hitters with changeup

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wood’s still not a big strike out guy Chip.. we just have the likes of B.J. and Dan to help Wood’s numbers.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wren needs to be a little more like Epstein in some areas imo, and perhaps braves players should be a little more vocal like Gregg.

    • fireboss

Wren needs to quit thinking he’s a drombowsky/Sherholtz clone he isn’t that smart and other GMs know it

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah Im deadly honest when I say no telling what Braves could have accomplished if we’d had a more adept GM.

        • fireboss

Or one that didn’t think he was slick or get his feelings hurt because a 500 pitcher turned down 82M to go to the Yankees instead. That’s part of his BJ signing. Has no idea what the market is and his stats guys either aren’t being listened to or are no good at all

  • fireboss

For some reason my live thread isn’t updating automatically.this happened yesterday too. Having some Twitter issues as well. So if I don’t answer it’s not that I’m asleep

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Sounds like network latency issues.

      • fireboss

Nope I’m not getting notified period. I have to refresh the page to see new posts

  • Jeff Schafer

    Medlen is pitching well today

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

When he’s got that changeup control like he has, he’s very tough.

      • Jeff Schafer

He’s had that since the All-star break it seems like

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Taken all year, but he’s getting back to his late 2012 form.

          • Jeff Schafer

Better late than never in 2013 Braves case

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Amen to that! We need 3 solid starters for October, at least.

  • Jeff Schafer

I always have to refresh to see new posts….just figured that was what you had to do

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

No, Disqus is supposed to throw up a little popup to let you know there’s a new comment without refreshing.

      • fireboss

It was doing that until last weekend. Since then nothing

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

You can try disconnecting your disqus account and re-validating.. That might help. I’ve often said the native WP comment system is better than disqus anyway. I for one wished we used it.

          • fireboss

You mean log out then log in again?

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That might help, but I mean going to disqus, removing your account, and re-creating essentially.

  • Jeff Schafer

lets pump that .333 average up here CJ

  • Jeff Schafer

wow, great catch against CJ, thought he had one there

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That was pitch number 75 for Travis Wood; his effectiveness may start slipping, as he holds opposing hitters to a .201 average in the first 75 pitches but they hit .241 off him after that.

    • Jeff Schafer

      nice stat…lets go braves!!

  • fireboss

Wood is good but we should be doing better

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah, I’m sorely worried about our lack of hot hitters … can’t win in the post season with only Freddie and CJ doing the lion’s share of the work

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

It’s not Wood’s cutter, it’s mixing that change with it that’s getting hitters out

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

BJ still arguing balls and strikes is embarrassing.

    • Jeff Schafer

      ^^^LOL I completely agree

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Some of the people on Twitter need to buy Baseball for Dummies or something.. my gosh

    • Jeff Schafer

      What are they saying?

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Just the usual day in, day out tripe, no tolerance for opinions that differ from their own, and no real appreciation for baseball outside of being fair weather fans.

        • fireboss

It’s the folks who love BJ and any criticism of him is either racial or you’re a hater or you’re told you can’t do it so shut up. I’m neither of the first two and the last is just silly. He’s been abysmal, and isn’t going to be better this year, maybe ever

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah he’s been a puzzle all year, and I’ve been very critical all year, with no apology. When people say they will always support BJ. I say.. I will always support the team, and so should BJ with his performance.

          • fireboss

They have no reason other than they really want him to be the star Wren had in his mind when he signed him. All the parroting of him being a second half player is simply uninformed BS. The numbers are so close in years where he played both halves as to be inconsequential. Last year was an outlier in terms of XBH and power in the second half. September is only his best month if you count last year. before last year it was august

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Agreed, but often SABR logic doesn’t hold up to close scrutiny.

  • Jeff Schafer

Medlen looks like he’s got a fresh new glove today

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Oh yeah, now that you mention it.. it does look new.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Like Wood, that was pitch number 75 for Kris Medlen; his effectiveness may start slipping, as he holds opposing hitters to a .264 average in the first 75 pitches but they hit .330 off him after that.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Or NOT

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

hehe Medlen trying to “cut one loose”

    • fireboss

meds ahs been as high as 94 a couple of times this year but those weren’t good pitches. Joe really has no idea he’s just babbling

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

No I mean “cut one loose”, as in fart. Sorry, I’m a juvenile at heart.

        • fireboss

OIC I wasn’t in that mode though I am often

  • fireboss

Meds pitching like he knows how :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Sweeney high fived Andre Dawson when he hit the Ivey.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Upton just increased his OBP. Woot! smh

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Need some insurance runs if we plan to get this clinch tonight.

  • fireboss

I reported the updating issue to fansided. support

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Seems to me it would affect us all if were a fansided issue, but no harm in mentioning it.

      • fireboss

Maybe but nothing’s changed here and it stopped. I use Disqus a lot of places and starting over is a pain. Besides Jeff said it didn’t work for him either so let them tell to go ask Disqus

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Moves to his right well.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Finally fixed our posts not going to our FB wall automatically. It was broke for awhile and I didn’t notice because we rely on auto-walling. I gotta look daily auto or not, especially after an upgrade.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wood: 97 Pitches: 63 Strikes, 34 Balls. Replaced?

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Guess not yet

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Perhaps they should have :) hehe

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

104 pitches for Wood. Tell heck with this losing season, lets just use Wood up!

  • fireboss

Had to step out and do some touch up trim. I hate painting and I am not good at it so it takes longer. My contractor however left for the fast money in the oil shale out around midland so I’m without a trusted one now. Anyway back in time for 2 on no one out

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Secret there is a good trim brush or sponge brush, and tape. Piece o’ cake. :)

      • fireboss

I’m impossibly sloppy by nature. Had tape trim brushes trim pads and still need to fix things :(

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Man I’m droopy sleepy

  • fireboss

    Wasted chances

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Here’s my mug of champagne if I don’t get back before the game is over. c|_|

    • fireboss

      too early

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    5 more outs
