Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals clinch playoff berths as Nationals lose to Marlins

Welcome back to the playoffs, Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals. Both teams were assured of making baseball’s postseason field on Sunday when the Washington Nationals lost to the Miami Marlins.

The Cardinals clinched a playoff spot for the third consecutive year. At 91-64 entering Sunday, they lead the NL Central and are assured no worse than a wild-card berth.

Atlanta is 92-63 and won its first NL East title since 2005 even before a 5-2 win at the Chicago Cubs.

The title was right there, across the front of the soaked gray T-shirts that each of the Atlanta Braves wore.

“WE OWN THE EAST,” it read.

The Braves wrapped up the NL East crown, and then rode two homers by Andrelton Simmons to a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs that touched off a party in the cramped visitors’ clubhouse at Wrigley Field.

The game was in the sixth inning when Washington lost 4-2 to Miami, giving the Braves their first division championship in eight years. There were a few high-fives in Atlanta’s dugout when the Marlins won.

The Braves sprayed champagne and doused each other with beer in the clubhouse. Cigars were passed around, and the smoke quickly filled the small room. A couple of players took a quick break to check on their fantasy football teams, and then re-joined the party.

“This is only one celebration of four, hopefully,” first baseman Freddie Freeman said.

How Far Will the Braves Go into the Playoffs?

The Atlanta Braves didn’t have to win Sunday to clinch the top spot in the National League East, but they did anyway.

Midway through the Braves’ game against the Chicago Cubs, NL East foe Washington dropped its first game of the day against Miami, guaranteeing that Atlanta would remain atop its division and earn a spot in the National League Division Series a year after going just one game into the postseason. The Braves put an exclamation mark on their historic day bytopping the Cubs 5-2 and taking the weekend series.

Seven games remain in the season, and only time will tell whom the Braves will face with the playoffs begin. As of Sunday afternoon, the only other National League teams guaranteed playing time in October are Los Angeles, which won the West Division, and St. Louis, which has clinched a spot in the postseason but not the NL Central crown.
