Live Game Thread: Phillies Vs. Braves (Game 1)

Live Thread and Preview – Phillies at Braves

The Philadelphia Phillies will be at Turner Field tonight to face the Atlanta Braves in a four game series, and what will be the final regular season games of the 2013 season for the Braves.

I’m not going to spend a great deal of time with a typical preview.  By this time in the season, we all know the particulars – we know that the Atlanta Braves have won the NL East, are trying now to regain and hold onto the best record in the National League in order to maintain home field advantage, and jumping through all the injury hurdles, lineup puzzles, and a host of other issues that make a successful postseason even tougher than it already is.

After last night’s embarrassing behavior (by both teams – and yes I know many disagree with me on that), I’m hoping for cooler, calmer heads on the part of the Braves, and more interest in playing hard than acting like 14 year olds.  With the loss last night, not just of their heads but of the game, the Braves are now a half game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the best record in the National League and the 1st Seed position in the post-season.  They still have a 2 game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for 2nd Seed.

David Hale will be making his 2nd start in the big leagues for the Atlanta Braves.  After his last outing on September 13, where Hale went a restricted five shutout innings, but struck out 9 batters while walking only 1, I predicted he would see at least one more start before the season concluded.  Hale was amazing in just five innings, and the Braves will hope for another solid outing from the young rookie.  If he can pitch well for the win tonight, the Braves will put Kris Medlen, Mike Minor, and Julio Teheran on the bump for the final 3 games of the season, and we’ll get a solid look at what the #1 through #3 starters for the post-season will most likely be.

The Braves have a great chance of winning all four of their final games with those pitchers on the hill, but of course the bats STILL need to wake up for the Braves!  The Phillies won’t have slouches on the mound either, so it’s vital that Atlanta experience one of those “hot moments” now.

Join us for our Live Thread tonight as the Braves begin their final series to conclude the regular season.  Just scroll down and share your thoughts with us!

hehe two years ago, or less, you never saw a BABIP stat on any broadcast. SABR is taking over baseball, and that don’t always make me happy.

    • Matthew Jones

The singular reason that I left the other Braves sites. Too many metrics. I don’t mind some, but dang, I don’t need to know every last statistic, such as what Uggla’s hitting after taking a BM in the 3rd inning when he’s not up to the plate.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

LOL Matthew. Yeah, I’ve read all the SABR books, the good ones, fully understand it, but just don’t always rely on it. There are old-school stats that tell me more, and to me, never will there be a substitute for the traditional eye test.

Been there many times, but no in January. I know it’s not nearly as “windy” as it has the reputation though.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Anyone else wholly disappointed in the content so far for the new Fox Sports 1? With a few exceptions, it’s mostly very bad imo.

    • Glen Morrow

Yeah , I watched it a few time lately and the programming really sucks

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I know it takes any new network time to grow, but my gosh! They won’t grow at all with some of their choices. Soccer? roflmao

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Course it’s not all their “choice”. They have to take what they can get to some degree.

        • Jeff Schafer

It’s ugly…i work closely with them

Tons of time to plan and this is the result…

So safe to say you’re not impressed either?

        Different strokes bro

        • fireboss

19 years in England. I grew to appreciate the game Much more intricate and interwoven than most here think. I managed to get tickets to two FA Cup finals. quite a event

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I appreciate that all sports have intricacies that have to be understood. It’s like hockey or golf… may seem boring to many, but the more you know the game, the more enjoyable it is. I appreciate soccer, but I think the push to popularize it over here is probably an uphill battle.

  • Glen Morrow

LOL.. Gerald almost fell off the base like Humpty Dumpty off the wall…lol

    • Guest

LOL we don’t need no player the kings horses and men can’t put back together again. God, I feel cheesy

      going to delete this!!

      • Glen Morrow

        lol

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Why does Jordan Schafer make me think of Leisure Suit Larry?

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Robles throws 4 seamers almost exclusively

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

DRS and UZR are very similar, and Joe is right, it’s all fun and interesting, but an eye test comparison tells you all you need to know on Andrelton. That said, +10 on DRS is rated as great, and +15 is gold glove caliber. You saw Andrelton’s DRS at over +40, so if you like the DRS metric, then you gotta love Simba and believe he wins the gold glove. :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

If Jason can get a single and a triple… hehe

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      But that’ll do too!

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I say Jason will break his 4 game hit record (multiple times) with 5 or more tonight.

  • fireboss

What they Saber guys don;t seem to get is that what they are preaching is way to complicated for the average fan. They wants short, simple answers not formula they can’t understand. UZR in particular is misused because the explanation of the stat says that it doesn’t say how well a player played or talk about talent just how he played in one year vs everyone else who played there in his league that year. It isn’t additive or cumulative or even comparable from year to year because the position players change so much

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah I’m not a particular fan of DRS or UZR for the very reasons you mention. They are very similar metrics, and I actually prefer DRS if I have to pick one, but I prefer to let my eyes tell me what a player is doing defensively, particularly with position players such as catchers where you almost have to.

  • Glen Morrow

Braves playing better baseball tonight , hopefully it continues threwout the rest of the series.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately facing Lee will be tough, but a good litmus test for playoff preparedness.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’m gonna say Francoeur and A. Jones. I think they both won GGs in the same year didn’t they?

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Hale is really impressing and making the most of his opportunities. Bodes well for his future if he can stay on track and stay healthy. He’s pitching well enough to get a good look in the spring, young or not.

    • fireboss

Of note is the total absence of Walden

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

yeah and a sad note based on my looks months ago

        • fireboss

I just jumped on for saying this on Twitter but this is exactly away the Angels gave him away for a coin flip shoulder injured prospect like Hanson. He’s unreliable, walks people then is wild in the zone. The motion is just to unrepeatable to be dependable

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

This push on the SABR stats on Braves’ broadcasts – I’m not too happy about it. More and more blogs are pushing it, and more embracing it, and I’m not sure it’s ultimately good for baseball, or teams. I would argue that the A’s should have done better if you could rely on it solely for team decisions. I just don’t like the push. What’s also scary is Tom Hart trying to explain it to Chip and Joe. It’s like the blind leading the blind isn’t it?

    • fireboss

These guys talking about stats are just like the fans sitting around talking about then at the bar they’re trying to understand and decide That’s what the saber guys don’t understand. Laughing at CHIP and Joe is laughing at the average fan

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah, and my main problem with some SABR guys, die hard ones, is that pompous attitude that unless you get it, well then you just don’t get it. I contend that often THEY don’t get it.

        • fireboss

    • Glen Morrow

      Ok bud see ya Sunday

  • Glen Morrow

5 hit night for Jhey , I don’t think he will make it back up there , but a triple away from the cycle.

  • Matthew Jones

Good game for our guys, although I would have liked to see some more hits later in the game. But that’s just me. :D Any word on McCann other than groin strain? I would guess that Freddi’s going to pull him out of the lineup until the NLDS.

    • fireboss

That’s exactly the plan as of this morning. Rest until NLDS. Laird needs the games anyway and make hasn’t hit all that well

      • Matthew Jones

Good. Saw that the Braves think they caught it early, so hopefully he’ll be fine by next week.
