Live Game Thread: Phillies Vs. Braves (Game 1)

Live Thread and Preview – Phillies at Braves

The Philadelphia Phillies will be at Turner Field tonight to face the Atlanta Braves in a four game series, and what will be the final regular season games of the 2013 season for the Braves.

I’m not going to spend a great deal of time with a typical preview.  By this time in the season, we all know the particulars – we know that the Atlanta Braves have won the NL East, are trying now to regain and hold onto the best record in the National League in order to maintain home field advantage, and jumping through all the injury hurdles, lineup puzzles, and a host of other issues that make a successful postseason even tougher than it already is.

After last night’s embarrassing behavior (by both teams – and yes I know many disagree with me on that), I’m hoping for cooler, calmer heads on the part of the Braves, and more interest in playing hard than acting like 14 year olds.  With the loss last night, not just of their heads but of the game, the Braves are now a half game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the best record in the National League and the 1st Seed position in the post-season.  They still have a 2 game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for 2nd Seed.

David Hale will be making his 2nd start in the big leagues for the Atlanta Braves.  After his last outing on September 13, where Hale went a restricted five shutout innings, but struck out 9 batters while walking only 1, I predicted he would see at least one more start before the season concluded.  Hale was amazing in just five innings, and the Braves will hope for another solid outing from the young rookie.  If he can pitch well for the win tonight, the Braves will put Kris Medlen, Mike Minor, and Julio Teheran on the bump for the final 3 games of the season, and we’ll get a solid look at what the #1 through #3 starters for the post-season will most likely be.

The Braves have a great chance of winning all four of their final games with those pitchers on the hill, but of course the bats STILL need to wake up for the Braves!  The Phillies won’t have slouches on the mound either, so it’s vital that Atlanta experience one of those “hot moments” now.

Join us for our Live Thread tonight as the Braves begin their final series to conclude the regular season.  Just scroll down and share your thoughts with us!

Let’s go Braves sweep the Phillies.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Amen brother. People been mad at me all day for saying the Braves need calmer heads and not act so childish. Good thing the series has concluded with the Brewers! Braves need to be more interested in winning and less interested in brash bravado.

  • fireboss

I’m here who brought the beer?

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Disqus wasn’t acting very strange on me today when I was posting some comments…. cursor flying all over the place like I had a broken mouse, etc. Very weird.

  • Glen Morrow

Need to get our bats going , this is no time for a slump. C’mon Braves we are all behind you ..

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well, thankfully the loss of Reed with a still tender Achilles, not too big a deal probably, but the Braves are fortunate it wasn’t worse.

    • Glen Morrow

I agree glad it was not McCann or Freeman that would have hurt alot more than losing Reed.

  • Glen Morrow

Braves time to Focus on the Phillies we need this game .

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Sweep would be super sweet, and frankly, surprising

  • Glen Morrow

No way to start the game with a error.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

No, and EJ don’t make many. I already see Twitter full of “see we should have Uggla in there” tweets.

  • Glen Morrow

Franklin I am surprised that Justin not in lineup , considering we need this game .

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well Fredi and Frank already said that resting players is apparently more important than seeding.

      • Glen Morrow

I think that stinks since we play so poorly on the road and play so well at home.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well maybe he’s thinking, we’re just playing poorly period right now lol, so maybe they need rest.

  • fireboss

    blooping and bleeding him already

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Jimmy Rollins singles on a fly ball to left fielder Evan Gattis. Cesar Hernandez to 2nd. None out.

Cesar Hernandez reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Elliot Johnson. None out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Domonic Brown flies out to center fielder Jason Heyward. One out.

and then… Darin Ruf grounds into a force out, shortstop Andrelton Simmons to third baseman Chris Johnson. Cesar Hernandez out at 3rd. Jimmy Rollins to 2nd. Darin Ruf to 1st. Two out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Hale gets out of an early jam. Good job.

  • Chief_Fred

trying a new login with Disqus to see if that helps Hale kept his cool and pitched well

  • Chief_Fred

    Jason Heyward ladies and gents

  • Glen Morrow

    That aboy Jhey

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Heyward homers on the first pitch delivered. Braves up 1-0 early.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Maybe the debacle last night served to fire up the Braves. I prefer to see teams play without emotion, but hey – whatever gets the juices flowing!

    • Jeff Schafer

Jhey’s homerun got my juices flowing….

  • Glen Morrow

so far Braves hitting good , keep it going Braves

  • Jeff Schafer

    Early hitting…i like this

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Freddie never threw any punches. He was aggressive, and he was NOT trying to break anything up as he said, in my opinion, but the NEVER threw a punch.

    • Jeff Schafer

      Freddie?

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        Edited ::)

  • Chief_Fred

new Login didn’t help with the refresh

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That’s baffling Fred. I did some research, but came up with nothing you haven’t already tried.

      • Chief_Fred

Disqus said try a different email account as if my fireweb address was the issue some how (idiots) made no nevermind as my mom would have said

Take your fine MLB, and shove it up your gapper!

  • Glen Morrow

So far Braves have their hitting shoes on tonight.

  • Glen Morrow

    3-0 Good Guys .

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah Cloyd’s not really hangin’ em. Braves just fired up

  • Jeff Schafer

I’m still questioning how Gattis hit that ball

    • Chief_Fred

      sand wedge?

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I know plenty about the game Joe, and I disagree with the way it was handled. It’s a pompous attitude to assume if you don’t agree you don’t know anything about baseball. I never said Gomez didn’t cross the line – I just said you have options on how you react to that, and I felt and still do that the reaction was not the best. Nothing that clears benches is best for baseball imo.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    CJ in on the act

  • Glen Morrow

Need to get Jordan’s bat going.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Ditto, not a time to bunt

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Up 4-0… we need Jordan to get his rhythm back, not bunt.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Jordan early, then late.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Jordan Schafer singles on a line drive to center fielder Cesar Hernandez. Chris Johnson scores. Two out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Well, bring on ChopTober

  • Glen Morrow

Braves looking good so far .

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Breath of fresh grass

  • Chief_Fred

That was a nice inning, we should do that more often

  • Jeff Schafer

I’ll take that first inning any day

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I liked David Hale’s poise his last outing. Looks like he stays within himself, has fun, and handles the pressure well to be so young.

    • Chief_Fred

he has a degree in economics. If you want to get him excited start talking GNP

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

haha yeah … global economics, and some lofty title you’d only find at an ivy school, and never in the real world lol

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Man, do I miss Wagner’s arm.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Phillies gave up as soon as they knew Manuel was gone lol

  • Chief_Fred

Jason tryin to inject life into the team. I like it

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Amazing recovery by him, and seems right back to form. I’ll never doubt his resiliency again

      • Chief_Fred

I still wince every time he dives

    • Jeff Schafer

injecting life into many, not just the team

  • Glen Morrow

Let’s get more runs braves , do not let up

    • Jeff Schafer

      Yesssir

    • Jeff Schafer

      interesting….lefty on lefty maybr?

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Could be. I think Fredi emphasizes that too much imo

    • Jeff Schafer

pretty sure Chip hasnt seen this yet

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That’s be my initial guess… just to rest McCann now that we have a 6 run lead.

    • Glen Morrow

Boy everything you say something , I say it too and seem like we are Bothers …Oh! wait he are …lol
