Live Game Thread: Philadelphia Phillies at Atlanta Braves – Series and Season Finale

As I reported here last night, the Braves’ loss to the Phillies in game 3 of the 4 game series was costly, and potentially devastating.  It means that in order to regain top seed for the playoffs, and thus home-field advantage throughout, two things have to happen today – The Braves MUST win, and the Cardinals MUST lose.

Today is a new day though!  The loss was yesterday, the Pendleton / Johnson fracas was yesterday, and there’s little point in worrying about what you cannot control.  The Braves cannot control what the Cardinals and Cubs do today, but they need to bring everything to bear in today’s last game of the season, win it, and then stay pumped for the playoffs whatever seed they are, or wherever they play.  In short, all is far from lost.

I’ll not bore you further with details.  Again, we’ve already reported what’s at stake for today, and now we’ll only need to stay glued to see how the day concludes.  I’ll be at Turner field for game 1 of the NLDS, and I’ll be pumped to know that if the Braves have overcome all the hurdles they faced already this year, one more won’t be out of the question!

Of Note

As you can see from the Atlanta lineup today, Chris Johnson is not in the lineup.  Some will jump to the conclusion it has something to do with last night’s fracas with Pendleton, but no.  Chris didn’t respond in kind, at least from the video we saw, with laying hands on Terry in any way.  Something further may have occurred in the clubhouse, but I doubt that too.  Finally, they have both reportedly apologized, and David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweeted that “Chris is not playing today, but not because of the incident last night.  I want to say that emphatically.”

The real reason, also according to O’Brien on Twitter, is that “Fredi said C Johnson has been nursing a jammed right shoulder since making a diving play Thursday.  That’s why he’s not in the lineup. “

With the very REAL need to win today, I don’t like it  CJ’s absence, but if he needs to nurse the shoulder, well it is what it is.  We need him healthy for the playoffs, win or lose today’s game.

I also don’t like Dan Uggla being in there, but of course with CJ out, it becomes more of a necessity.  Only time will tell how today’s lineup tweak affects the outcome.
