Live From LA: Open Thread - NLDS Game 3

Live From LA!

No, we’re not really in LA, but our hearts are – hearts completely behind the Braves for an LA sweep and NLDS Title!  This is one of those rare circumstances where the Braves are on the road, which is not so good, but where you don’t want them to return to Atlanta to play another game!  If they can sweep the games in LA, they’ll return to Atlanta as NLDS Title holders.

The Atlanta Braves are in Los Angeles now for games 3 and 4 of the NLDS.  At Turner Field, the Dodgers took game 1 behind the stellar pitching of Clayton Kershaw, and the less then stellar, and unusually shaky outing of the Braves’ Kris Medlen.  Atlanta came back with a flourish in game 2 though behind good pitching from Mike Minor, despite the Dodgers having Zack Greinke on the bump.

In LA tonight, rookie Julio Teheran will start for the Atlanta Braves, and so far we’ve heard no change in the Dodger’s plan to use Hyun-jin Ryu.  Ryu has nursed a sore elbow, and his doctors recently watched him throw a bullpen session, but the LA front office insists that Ryu will be good to go tonight.  For a look at what we might expect from Ryu, take a look at my analysisposted earlier today.

I got a case of Good People Coffee Oat Stout (cuz craft beers that are hoppy rule!), but no food. Who’s got the snacks? No Dodger Dogs please!

    • Chief_Fred

Dodger Dogs are now Magic Johnsons but since they’re grilled and smothered in onions the magic’s all gone. Besides we have more johnsons than the Dodgers :)

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

More of Johnsons too, in more ways than one :)

        • Chief_Fred

welp this was a vain attempt to get the updates to work by using facebook to log in but that too failed. Crap

Sort of interesting that Laird isn’t catching against a LHP and since he’s caught Teheran more this year as well as holding runners better.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

How ’bout running Ryu out early tonight… maybe a nice, easy 11-3 game?

  • fireboss

And we’re off with a Jhey ground ball that Uribe and Ramirez discussed before throwing him out at first

  • fireboss

JUP continue to be Ryu up double to right center

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

All right Evan… just like BP.

  • fireboss

Freddie hits a broken bat blooper caught by Crawford in left 2 out

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Ok, I’ve arrived. The game can begin now.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        Okay, you can stay.

    There’s a start!

  • fireboss

El Oso Blanco delivers and the Braves are up 1-0

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Single by Gattis, driving in JUp from 2nd. Braves 1-0, btm 1st.

Real fans, knowledgeable fans, will be present for our Live thread ;)

    BMac walking for exercise

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Don’t let him off the hook here.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

So natch it’s 0-2 to Chris.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        So natch, he delivers! 2-0!

  • fireboss

    CJ 2.0 singles

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

We got Hirschbeck behind the plate (finally) tonight, right? Wide strikes; not high ones.

  • fireboss

    Simba’s patented popup

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

The new twist – went to the right side.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Andrelton Simmons pops out to second baseman Mark Ellis. Three out.
The Braves score 2 early though, and are up 2-0 on the Dodgers

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Carl Crawford singles on a ground ball to left fielder Evan Gattis. None out.
Then a wild pitch by Julio allows CC to take 2nd.

  • fireboss

    Julio K teheran

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

He’s a lil nervous, but bringing the heat… two 94 mph 4 seamers , 95 mph 4s, and a 93 mph 2 seamer (that he got hit on) to start. He’s amped.

  • fireboss

    Bear paw caught that one

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I worry when I see Twitter people with guy names calling Teheran “cute”. My, what is this world coming to?

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Agon is
.333 AVG, 1 HR, 2 RBI in the NLDS so far

Must edit the above stat now :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Elliot Johnson grounds out, shortstop Hanley Ramirez to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. One out.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Still got Twits on twitter saying it was dumb to leave Uggs out of the PS Roster. Lotta babies dropped shortly after they were born.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

So has Jason broken 2 bats already tonight?

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yes. He got no good wood.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Someone made a good point on Twitter. Lots of love for Ryu by TBS for being the first South Korean to start a playoff game, but Teheran getting no love for being the first Columbian. (Note: I’ll have to verify both of those stats)

    • fireboss

Just verified Julio is the first Columbian pitcher to work in the post season others from there who played in post Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Renteria both SS of course

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Braves PR shoulda been all over that themselves.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Whiff Puig

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

In my opinion, Gattis played that well. Television angles are deceptive, and if he dives, runs score.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

That was close to a disaster…. wow… too close.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I think Teheran is amped due to jitters. He’s over-throwing a lil. Maybe a visit from BMac to settle him down a touch might help.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      Never mind. 4-2

  • fireboss

    could have done without that

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Oh well, it’s very early. I’m confident Julio will settle in, and Ryu’s elbow will get sore. Then Capuano lol ;-)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Braves might do well to stop trying to pulverize every single offering.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

The way Justin is dialed in tonight, I’ll give him a waiver on that.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

People trying to say only Puig and a few others keep JUp from going to 3rd earlier on Freddie’s hit. Most RFs hold the runner on that in my judgement.

  • fireboss

    Gattis AB was special

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Bmac Hack Attack that makes the outfield signs crack!

  • fireboss

Mac is not Mac even if he hits the pitch while I’m typing this

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      No, he’s not been

      • fireboss

Horrible at bat by Mac horrible panic by Ryu

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    wow big break

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Twitter refresh rate is slow as Brian McCann w/o a Ryu error tonight.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wow I wanna see that out on 1st in slo mo.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah slow-mo on DVR.. got him by a half step

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Dodgers are just patiently waiting on Julio’s breaking balls.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Puig actually eased up on the way to 1st?

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

He aint fast, just wreckless and lucky, and yes, some would say aggressive, which the Braves could use a little of.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

I like the aggressive, but not the undisciplined bits.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah, aggressive base running wins games.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Okay… that’s enough for Julio.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Wood mebbe?

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

That would be a good contrast

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’d actually prefer to see Hale. I think he’s throwing better now, and is more confident, but you’re right, Wood would be a look they’re unprepped for.

  • Glen Morrow

Sorry Guys had computer problems…This is really sucking

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Man, I don’t relish the thought of a possible loss here, and Garcia on the bump in game 4.

    • Glen Morrow

Can’t do any worse than Julio has tonight..

  • fireboss

Fredi has to consider Schafer in center and Gattis catching if he wants to win this. Mac hasn;t hit a lick lately

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I might even consider Laird Fred. He’s hit well lately, and I thought he might get the start tonight anyway.

      • fireboss

I did too but Gattis bat is a threat and he’s been very good at the plate.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

It’s still incredibly early, and Wood has been good before. He may be again now with the rest he’s had.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wood limits the damage, showing good poise. Still early. We got this!

    • Glen Morrow

Yeah we got put together a big inning…We can do this Let’s to it here in the 4th
