Braves vs. Phillies: Spring Live Thread!

Let The Live Threads Begin!

I don’t know about you, but there are a couple of things that have my excited today!  First off, this is one of my normal off-days from work.  Yes, I work an odd schedule, but I love it!  Secondly, how can anyone not be pumped, that while it’s just a Spring Training game, today is the first television broadcast of an Atlanta Braves Spring game! Don’t forget that we have the complete Spring Schedule (with TV Broadcasts) for your spring, season-long reference.

In keeping with the excitement of seeing the Braves on TV today, we’ll be doing a Live Thread during the game, as the Atlanta Braves take on the Philadelphia Phillies, away at the Phillies training facility, Bright House Networks Field, Clearwater, Florida.  Game time is 1:05 PM EST.

We realize most of Tomahawk Take’s regular visitors work during the weekdays, but if you happen to be blessed and at home like myself, or you’re playing hooky, or have a fast phone with an MLB app, feel free to join us!  Heck, even if you cannot watch it or listen in on radio, you might be able to join us here at TT in your browser, and participate in our Live Thread!

If so, just scroll down until you see the Disquis Comments Section, and join the fray…err., conversation.  I won’t bother filling you in on starters, lineups, and all the typical things we prep you on in pre-games or usual Live Threads.  As you know, Spring Training is a time when coaches try to look at as many players as have the invites, so things typically change from inning to inning.  In our Live Thread though, as we watch or listen, we’ll share our thoughts with you about what we see or hear.  We’d love to hear your thoughts as well, so please join us.

Just about a half hour away from game time in the Braves’ first televised game of the Spring, versus the Phillies, on the MLB Network. Join us here for some biting analysis. We promise, it won’t bite too much ;-)

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

So wish I had video feed… or even radio!

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      No MLB Network?

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        Not in the office, unfortunately.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Oh well, I love MLB AtBat app and a pair of earphones.

          • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

I’m too cheap… have an XM subscription, but they’re spotty in Spring. Don’t wanna double buy for 3 weeks.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I can comment until about 1:45, then have to run out to pick up my 8 year old from school. First question she’ll ask me when she gets in the truck is, “What’s the score?” and I kid you not!

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

There’s two good things: (1) the question; (2) the truck.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Never owned anything but trucks. Old redneck, off-roader, and hunter, and I haul wood, and do lots of odd jobs for friends and neighbors. Must have.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I havent even had time to look at who’s starting today I’m ashamed to say? Who’s on the mound for the respective teams?

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Beachy and Ryan O’Sullivan. ROS hasn’t pitched above High-A ball, so he’s evidently a fill-in guy today.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Hope Brandon starts to settle in some.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Dang just realized: I failed to list Bobby Abreu among the Philly outfielders. Dunno that his presence changes their outlook very much at all (could be worse, actually), but it was an oversight.

Otherwise, it kinda looks like a ‘road’ lineup for Philly today. Odd, given that they’re in Clearwater.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah what, he signed a MLC with the Philthies worth about 800k as I recall. Had a great winter league season with Venezuela, and the old man could factor in at some point.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ Julien Benjamin

let’s keep the winning going today

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Indeed. Hiya Julien. Class break?

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ Julien Benjamin

        yep. Came just in time

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

O’Sullivan in 2013: 2.52 ERA for the Clearwater Threshers (Florida State League). So this is effectively his home park. Not a starting pitcher – in fact, finished 29 (6 saves) in 2013. 45K/35W in 75 innings, 53 games. So if he goes more than 2 innings, I’ll be shocked.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’d like to see Brandon get around 4, and hope he doesn’t throw too hard.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

So far they’ve been going 3 innings this time through the order.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah, don’t want to overdo it with Beachy especially, but Id love to know he can go 4 now, especially if he’s showing control.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Anticipating this game, my cheeks are clinched so tight my recliner is complaining ;) lol

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    John Sickels about O’Sullivan: “A 6-2, 190 pound right-hander, O’Sullivan features a low-90s sinker, and
he mixes in a good slider, adequate changeup, and fringy curve. His
arsenal is diverse enough for him to start and he did open nine games
for Great Lakes, but with his health history [elbow] he probably fits better in
the bullpen. He needs to sharpen his command and prove he can stay
    healthy.”

    >> This kid was the PTBNL in the Joe Blanton trade (to Dodgers) in 2012.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah I think I remember reading he might well be TJ bound at some point soon due to that elbow.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Braves lineup:
Schafer 8 BUpton DH Freeman 3 Doumit 9
    Johnson 5 Uggla 4 Simmons 6 Lerud 2 Terdoslavich 7

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

We knew Doumit could hit, but like many players that get amped when joining a new team, I can see him being highly valuable with pop off the bench this season. High hopes.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Brilliant… MLB Gameway has the wrong O’Sullivan pictured!

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Sean, now that’s a horse of a different color.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    haha Lerud catching… ooooo k :)

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ Julien Benjamin

I don’t even remember hearing that name before

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

He was dropped from the 40 man by the Phils last year, so catching him for revenge? Minor league, with not many chops to recommend him really, but I’m sure the Braves wanna look a little.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Yeah, that’s pretty much due to every catcher above A-ball getting duty for the major league club.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

I have an ‘Over-Under’ predictions post just about ready… not sure when to go with it, though.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Give it about a solid hour and a half or so, we can tweet out this live thread a few more times, then go ahead and post it featured bro.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Actually wasn’t sure about today even…. until maybe two in-progress series’s finish.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

          Your call bro

          • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Trying not to over-exert myself before the regular season. It is Spring, after all :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Old school scouts like Fregosi are a dying breed.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Man, that didn’t come out right.. I meant no offense by “dying breed”. Sheesh Chris!

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Sorry.. context.. if you’re not watching, don’t know if Radio is airing it, but they are honoring Fregosi pre-game.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        Endangered species?

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

          Better phrase indeed

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Fregosi was extremely well-liked by everyone who had the pleasure to meet him, from all I’ve ever heard.

  • Jeff Schafer

And the boys are on the field!!

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      and looking for trouble…?

      • Jeff Schafer

I hope that little white ball said some ya mama jokes to the Braves

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

More like ‘the old men’ in this case.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Dave O’Brien: Beachy making 2nd start for #Braves today, w/ scheduled relief from Carpenter, Simmons Varvaro, and LHs D.Rodriguez, Ian Thomas.

  • Jeff Schafer

Man I like Schafer in the leadoff

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Announcer said Schafer’s 2nd go around with the Braves. No, not technically.

    • Jeff Schafer

What do you mean by that? He left and now back

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Despite injuries, he was a Brave in 09, 11, and last season guys.

        • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

…and gone to Houston in 2012.

          • Jeff Schafer

            Thinking he meant Braves organization

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Well, yeah… first one ended by injury and trade for Bourn.

  • Jeff Schafer

Base hit??? base hit??? No BJ thats an error

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

“B. J. Upton singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jimmy Rollins. One out.”
      — then again, they still think Sean O’Sullivan is pitching.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Time for a CJ single to short left-center.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      …or not

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Like some bread with that jam, CJ?

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Must be a slight radio delay. I’ll try to be patient :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Jimmy’s off to his old tricks again I see. Grrrr.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That mid-day Florida sky could create havoc on popups and high flies. Simba a little rubber legged on that pop.

  • Jeff Schafer

So they officially gave BJ a hit on that….wow

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Eve in spring, the statisticians are feeling sorry for him. LOL

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Philly hometown scoring is in mid-season form.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Sharp shot, way to get in front of it Dan.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Prediction: Uggla walks.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Unfortunately, that hardly takes a crystal ball bro. That said, I predict a ground out.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        He’s now 3-10 after that 2-2 start. 3 walks, 3 K.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well, he did another of his propensities.

        • Jeff Schafer

well there you have it….fastball down the middle….lots of air

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Gonna have to work on that prophecy thing.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Excellent start for Beach.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ Julien Benjamin

    Uggla being Uggla

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

(Sounds of furious keyboard typing as Alex Anthopoulos blocks Frank Wren’s cellphone number.)

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        LOL.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Alex and the Blue Jays are certainly tuning in I’m sure.

  • Jeff Schafer

first hit of the ball game…way to stay with the pitch and hit it where it came in at

    • Jeff Schafer

      Lerud that is

  • Jeff Schafer

Bobby Abreu, what is this 2005?

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Wait until he faces Bartolo Colon.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

He got a minor league contract with the Phils for about 800K

  • fireboss

I escaped! Nice feed from the Phoollies .. beachy looks close to normal unlike last year

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Craig Kimbrel’s brother is interviewing JS

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      Matt?

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

No, he just looked a little in the face like a heavy-set CK.

  • fireboss

And Disqus is still not updating.. crap

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That has baffled me for six months!

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Fred, I don’t remember what we tried last year… did you clear your chrome cache? Did you try disabling any extensions or addons you have running and restarting. It might help to get a screenshot of your console tab in settings/ development tools.

        • fireboss

I’m using Firefox and the only add on I have running is adblock plus. I’ve always run It and never had an issue

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Interesting.. technically disquis uses a java popup of some sort that appends to the top or bottom of the screen. Even if AdBlock isn’t reporting the block, might be worth turning it off, and doing a restart to see. Just throwing out ideas.

          • fireboss

I killed it for this page. we shall see

I see that it made no difference :(

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Java’s notoriously pushy. Tried an uninstall to see. Can always re-install.

          • fireboss

            Okay BRB

          • fireboss

Could not have the Java Toolkit active do it? I have it set to ask and it didn’t and I don’t see a way to activate it without the ask. I’m scarping around for anything

      • fireboss

It’s got to be local. My phone was updating fine. I’ll piddle with the Firewall

  • Ryan Cothran

My take on comments and the game thus far:
    1. Schafer has to learn to walk more and strikeout less to be successful in the leadoff role.
    2. There doesn’t look to be any magic potion that has cured BJ or Uggla.
    3. Can’t see the gun. Beachy’s velo?

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Not sure of his Velo… prolly missed comments while typing.. He don’t seem to be throwing too hard atm.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

MLB showing the pitch count, but not the velo unless I’m blind, which I am btw. :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Nice berm candy

    • fireboss

Amen .. love the baseball camera dudes, they always find the best views of the ballpark

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well she was a Philly girl, but I don’t care. Drool ;) hehe

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Think Jordan tied on that. Close

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      Replay!

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Beach through 2: no hits, 1 walk, 0 K.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

My prediction, FF5 more than steps up to that big ass contract he got. :)

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Single… here’s hoping your predictions work a lot better than mine!

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’m also excited for how Doumit can help this club.

  • fireboss

The wind blows .. in more ways than one

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Beachy’s looking a touch tentative to me.

    • fireboss

      he’s rusty

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Just hoping he’s truly healthy with no more elbow setbacks

        • http://tomahawktake.com/ Julien Benjamin

          still pretty worried about him

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah, I know they hope he’ll be in the 5 man, but I just don;t want them to rush him back with the issues he’s had. Docs declared him sound, but they did last year too. We want him in that category of TJs who come back stronger, not digress.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Well – got through 3 unscathed.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Gameday thinks Kevin Munson is now pitching for Philly, but all of their declarations are subject to review :)

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Munson’s indeed on the mound now.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        “Review upheld” – thanks

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’ll start trying to mention lineup changes for the Gameday Challenged. I feel your pain as I’ve used it, frustratingly, on many occasions.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

They got a late start due to the Fregosi honor, so not as much live baseball as I would’ve liked. Have to go get my young’un from school in about a half hour or less.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Dan walks. Prediction now justified, if an inning late Alan.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

I absolutely wasn’t gonna say anything this time ’round!

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

(So of course now Simba will prolly tomahawk one deep to left)… ah… I get it, it’s working in reverse.

  • fireboss

Uggs still knows how to walk I see.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Bases juiced for Joey T. 1 out.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

“In play, run(s)” <<— LIKE button

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    1-0 Braves. woot

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Dave O’Brien… or maybe Caroll.. not sure:
    “David O’Brien @ajcbraves
    1m
#Braves Beachy had similar velocity to 1st start, 88-91 FB. Better command of all pitches.”
“#Braves Beachy gave up a walk and HBP in 3 hitless, scoreless innings, looked significantly better than 1st start.”

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ Julien Benjamin

      decent
