Atlanta Braves vs. St. Louis Cardinals: Spring Live Thread!

This is Tomahawk Take’s 2nd Live Thread during the 2014 Grapefruit League, Spring Training season.  The Atlanta Braves will travel to Jupiter, Florida and Roger Dean Stadium to take on the St. Louis Cardinals today at 1:05 PM EST, and the game is scheduled to be on SportSouth! .  Again, we won’t bore you with lineups and batting orders and all the typical things you see in a preview, but we would love it if you join us for the Live Thread today, to comment and share with us your thoughts about the Atlanta Braves.  Heck, even Cardinals fans are welcome to come juke and jive!

If you’re a Braves’ fan, then you no doubt have been keeping up with the news about Kris Medlen, the new one year contract with Ervin Santana, and all the other questions that have already come into play this spring.  We’re just a little past the halfway point of Spring Training, and things have already gotten quite exciting for the Braves.  Some of that excitement we’ve loved, and some (like Meds injury) we’ve hated!

I have to applaud what Frank Wren and Company have been willing to do this off-season to secure a long-term, young team, spend the money they need to spend to acquire good players to fill gaps, and generally move forward with what has already looked like a new day and a new philosophy in Atlanta.  Granted, the anticipated new stadium money is often considered to be the only reason for the Braves’ stepping out and taking chances, but I think there’s the beginnings of a new culture in Atlanta as well.

We’ve seen some signs of life from some struggling players, good performances from pitchers, and despite recent BAD news, the Braves’ are still poised to have a successful season!  I’m crossing both my fingers and toes that the mix of excitement is about over.  It’s only 18 days until the regular season opens for the Atlanta Braves, and just 26 days until the Braves’ home opener.

Probable Starters Today – 1:05 PM EST

Atlanta Braves
Freddy Garcia (RHP)

St. Louis Cardinals
Lance Lynn (RPH)

Tomorrow it’s “profligate”, as in the Braves’ have been unusually profligate this off-season, to hear some tell it.

Y’all see this? A baseball-themed curved coin being considered by the US Mint. Cool, but that would be completely unusable in any vending machine.

Not to be too graphic, but I was thinking about a good solid half hour with a book on my man-cave porcelain throne.

        • fireboss

Well that was way too graphic and I need to get that image flushed from my mind

Well, Garcia and Gearrin have taken the brunt of this today. Mark Lamm contributed, but his efforts were mostly charged against cory’s account. Varvaro came away unscathed. Ditto for 2 other minor leaguer (Hoyt, Harper) after things were well decided.

Hate to think how much worse it would have been (16-0? 18-0?) had the wind been a non-factor.

Offense? There hasn’t been any. Chris Johnson had a double, Mejia and Cunningham had singles.
Christian Bethancourt was just robbed on an oppo field shot to the track that garnered a standing ovation by the Cardinal fans. That should have at least broken the shutout.

Cunningham fought Trevor Rosenthal to a full count, but K’d to end it.

Braves go out meekly: 11-0, with just 3 hits and 3 fielding errors (one a bit over-zealous on the part of the official scorer, but there it is).

    Cheers all!
