Atlanta Braves vs. St. Louis Cardinals: Spring Live Thread!

This is Tomahawk Take’s 2nd Live Thread during the 2014 Grapefruit League, Spring Training season.  The Atlanta Braves will travel to Jupiter, Florida and Roger Dean Stadium to take on the St. Louis Cardinals today at 1:05 PM EST, and the game is scheduled to be on SportSouth! .  Again, we won’t bore you with lineups and batting orders and all the typical things you see in a preview, but we would love it if you join us for the Live Thread today, to comment and share with us your thoughts about the Atlanta Braves.  Heck, even Cardinals fans are welcome to come juke and jive!

If you’re a Braves’ fan, then you no doubt have been keeping up with the news about Kris Medlen, the new one year contract with Ervin Santana, and all the other questions that have already come into play this spring.  We’re just a little past the halfway point of Spring Training, and things have already gotten quite exciting for the Braves.  Some of that excitement we’ve loved, and some (like Meds injury) we’ve hated!

I have to applaud what Frank Wren and Company have been willing to do this off-season to secure a long-term, young team, spend the money they need to spend to acquire good players to fill gaps, and generally move forward with what has already looked like a new day and a new philosophy in Atlanta.  Granted, the anticipated new stadium money is often considered to be the only reason for the Braves’ stepping out and taking chances, but I think there’s the beginnings of a new culture in Atlanta as well.

We’ve seen some signs of life from some struggling players, good performances from pitchers, and despite recent BAD news, the Braves’ are still poised to have a successful season!  I’m crossing both my fingers and toes that the mix of excitement is about over.  It’s only 18 days until the regular season opens for the Atlanta Braves, and just 26 days until the Braves’ home opener.

Probable Starters Today – 1:05 PM EST

Atlanta Braves
Freddy Garcia (RHP)

St. Louis Cardinals

45 minutes+ and counting to the game, and our Live Thread! Hop on board at game time, or earlier if you must, and join us to talk all things Atlanta Braves. Garcia could make a statement today!

  • Jeff Schafer

Boston and Twins on MLB network

  • Jeff Schafer

excited to see Tommy La Stella today

  • Jeff Schafer

BJ swing looks pretty much the same

    • fireboss

Swing wasn’t bad, it was all that movement before the swing that screwed him up. It’s better but not great

      • Jeff Schafer

Well yeah, you can’t really change the way your bat comes around your body…I used “swing loosely

  • Jeff Schafer

    Swinging out of his shoes

  • Jeff Schafer

    K for BJ

  • Jeff Schafer

Haha broadcast team was talking about how bad b_j’s is and how he should not be the leadoff guy

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

What more could they really say? LOL

      • Jeff Schafer

true but its just humorous to hear

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

hehe wasn’t that bad of a hop :)

  • Jeff Schafer

Justin looks a bit bigger than last year

  • Jeff Schafer

though it still spring training I love it if the Braves beat the Cardinals

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Me too, but though people call me strange, and I have no family ties to St. Louis, if I wasn’t a Braves’ fanatic, I’d probably be a Cards fan. It goes back to when I was a very small kid and I didn’t know what loyalty meant. Used to love watching the Cards.

      • fireboss

Cards are a class organization top to bottom. I grew up where we listened to a lot of Cardinals because the Cubs played in the daytime and KMOX with Harry Carey was the night game.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

          Couldn’t agree more.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Freddy has a good chance to make a statement today, especially if Brandon keeps having issues.

    • Jeff Schafer

I’ve already came to realize Freddy Garcia will be in our rotation

    • fireboss

Fredi is already penciling Freddy in. His comment after Meds injury was very telling

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’ve absolutely ZERO problems with that, as Freddy has shown he can be a good finesse starter.

        • fireboss

I don;t disagree but I doubt he’s there more than 1 time around the circuit

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah is age would preclude much longevity, and though he has finesses, it’s not good enough to sustain much success start in, start out.

  • fireboss

And the announcer was calling a home run until it wasn’t now blaming top spin Uh-huh

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Big sky in Florida, with no back drop. Lose the ball. I’m making excuses for him now.

      • fireboss

he just thought he smoked it from the sound and wanted to start with a bomb. It’s spring training for them as well

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Molina can still do it.

    • Jeff Schafer

Yep, Gattis tried to go the other way but Molina just knows how

      • fireboss

To be fair Gattis smoked that line drive. That it was caught wasn’t due to a bad at bat

  • fireboss

And the good hitter are welcoming the old man on the mound

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

OMG Freddy.. use the rosin bag!

    • fireboss

Hand sweat no make pitch :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Damn DNS errors on network again today. Arrgh :)

    • fireboss

Come on over my feed is clean.. bring beer – wheat beer please

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Euwww :) Prefer a good double IPA ;)

        • Jeff Schafer

Man I’d like a double ipa right now….or just sitting in the stands watching this game live

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’ll home brew and send you some, and I’ll break down and brew Fred some “wheat” recipe.

          • fireboss

I drink the Shocktop white most of the time but out here it’s harder to find so I end up with whatever they have or Ice tea

        • fireboss

          barley isn’t my friend

  • fireboss

Banana hat and Mickey Mouse gloves in a Braves jersey.. too early to be too drunk, perhaps for a kid?

  • Jeff Schafer

    Braves shopping Ernesto this year?

    • fireboss

Yep looks that way to me

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        Mejia, Meija, Meiwhat?

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      Undoubtedly.

  • fireboss

Mejia’s a strong man pity he hasn’t been able to make the jump

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

As Ryan pointed out, he DOES look like Pujols’ twin brother. Uncanny. Wish he could play like the Albert of a few years ago!

      • fireboss

        Pujols mini-Me

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Finally done with lunch… I won a contest for the office. The cookies are especially nice :)

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Obviously, Lynn is dealing.

    • fireboss

he’s looked good, live FB and around the zone

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Okay, did we learn anything about La Stella’s fielding from that E4? The St. Louis radio guys are surprised it wasn’t ruled a hit.

  • fireboss

Considering buying a Medlen Jersey in sympathy, maybe making it a thing though I haven’t figured out how

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Somebody on twitter suggested doing a ‘Flatbill Friday’ tribute.

      • fireboss

Eh I dunno, I can’t wear a hat like that with a straight face. I’ve been a Medlen guy from the first time I watched how he worked. This was a hammer blow to a guy who worked hard to get respect

        • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

I can’t understand how anyone would have a lack of respect for his work.

          • fireboss

Stat geeks hate his FIP and keep saying he isn’t as good as he looks. I wrote once that I preferred facts to theories and was excoriated for not knowing what a theory was. Of course I do and he didn’t but he was adamant that FIP proved Meds was a fluke

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Excoriated? Good daily word. FIP? Stupid daily stat.

          • fireboss

I checked my word of the day calendar today :) FIP means nothing unless you’re looking to trade for or sign a guy then only as it relates to how your defense compares to the one the pitcher had before. Other than that it’s a geek stat and xFIP isn’t any closer than an educated guess

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

            Agreed, thus my “stupid” comment.

          • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Yeah – FIP aficionados bother me.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        Was it RockyTopSkiBum?

        • fireboss

And I thought CB handles were awful back in the day..

        • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Heh – I really don’t recall… it was retweeted to me.

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

He picks at me occasionally for my article … Cap Controversy, where I let it be known I hate flat bills. He thinks I’m not hip. LOL. He’s right, but what’s his point, right? hehe

  • fireboss

Not a good pitch to throw on and Freddy is slow to the plate but that was reasonably close

  • Brandon_Woodworth

It scares me that we might have to rely on Freddy Garcia every 5th day for a while.

    • fireboss

Phillies and Nats will beat him up I suspect, Mets will eventually. Marlins will take longer. I hope he isn’t there more than two weeks

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        ahh Huddy. Hindsight. 20/30

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

At the end of this year, the rotation COULD be Minor, Santana, Teheran, Floyd, and Beachy. That sounds pretty stout. Now if we can just get to that point…first 2 months were looking fairly easy on the schedule. Not so much any more.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Is Lance distantly related to Fred (not our Fred). He’s smokin’ at a different position.

    • fireboss

      aren’t we all brothers?

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        … from other mothers

        • fireboss
  • fireboss

    BJ in midseason strikeout form

  • fireboss

That was off the plate blue

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Molina being Molina

  • Brandon_Woodworth

I’m still seeing all this Uggla hate despite him being .304/.469/.656/1.034 with 8 walks to 9 strikeouts this spring.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I like the tweaks he’s making Brandon, and I’m highly hopeful for a good season from Dan.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

From the reports, I am much more bullish on Dan than on Melvin. Uggla’s swing is a lot simpler, and if it was truly about getting his legs under him, then it’s also a much easier fix.

That and he has an uncanny eye.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Of course BJ is hitting 100 points higher than his brother now.

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Good point, cuz as much as we pick on BJ, Justin the Younger ain’t conquering and pillaging exactly.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

La Stella to Pena to Mejia… not your household name DP, but it works.

  • fireboss

Wind playing tricks with the baseball today

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

St. Louis announcer just pulled a Chip Carey “there’s a long one! … and it… falls to the warning track…”

    • Brandon_Woodworth

Was ou of the room, did our cameraman put the focus on the upper deck ala our normal broadcasts of deep fly bals?

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

        I have radio only :(

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

          Video killed the radio star

          • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Work and being too cheap killed the streaming video subscription

      • fireboss

No upper deck but he was looking at the berm for bikini’s :)

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

          Small world

          • fireboss

Well some are yea but that’s not a bad thing

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

White Sox coming to play the B;ham Barons in Birmingham. Only seats available by the time I saw they were, was berm, but if it’s warm, might not be a bad place (bikini reference)

          • fireboss

Always good when the sun shines

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Lou Brock. We bow!

    • fireboss

      Ernie Broglio where are you

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Nice reference bro. The old infamous Brock trade.

        • fireboss

I remember it well. Broglio and Shantz were supposed to be great gets but broglio was done by 66 and Shantz had a 5+ era and retired the next season

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Broglio was young, but looked like a 47 year old man. Poor guy. Lou still looks 47 almost

          • fireboss

Shantz was 38 and mostly a throw in but Broglio was a young stud and the Cubs complained that the Cards knew his arm was shot when they traded him he retired at 30

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Six K’s in a row.

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

So naturally Gattis will probably park one.

      • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

7 in a row now. Wow.

        • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

And CJ2.0 makes 8 in a row… 10 overall after the middle of 4 innings. Unbelievable.

          • fireboss

Pitchers are supposed to be ahead of hitter but Lynn is making the lineup look bad

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

            Well, Atlanta’s swinging away too.

          • fireboss

            That’s different because. . .

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Garcia’s looking like a man who’s been up late recently, like he’s got a new baby or something. ;-)

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Also using the wind to full advantage. Sounds like he might have yielded 5 homers otherwise.

      • fireboss

        Four certainly

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        Very one-dimensional pitching atm.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Beard Envy. Motte

  • fireboss

This beard fetish in MLB is so silly

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Perhaps he wants to be gritty and be in Boston. SMH and LMAO at “gritty”.

      • fireboss

        Grizzly Adams man crushes

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

      If it’s anti-Yankee, I’m in favor.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Now let’s tie it! haha

  • fireboss

Looks like a player. . .as opposed to a bookend

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Diaz didn’t end up on the better team, or did he? hehe.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Some baseball team (Atlanta?) should claim that song… Clap Along, If you feel like a room without a roof”, and have the fans clapping to beat the band. Not much on popular music, but that’s a catchy, “happy” tune.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

    Anthony Varvaro pitching.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Anyone think Green makes the bench? Good backup for CJ for sure.

    • Brandon_Woodworth

      Laird/Doumit/Schafer/Pena/Terdoslavich makes it hard.

    • fireboss

      nope no room

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Probably. Hamilton isn’t hitting enough, Pena is the only infield backup otherwise. Joey T could be the casualty.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I kind of see this.. despite the detractors below :) hehe

        • fireboss

could happen I guess if Joey has a bad spring and they think Pena can’t spot at third

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well, good problem to have, cuz we’ve not been deep at 3rd for sure.

          • fireboss

not really sold on joey’s bat myself so yea on pondering i could see that

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

He’s like several of our minor leaguers.. play well in minors, Joey did well in winter play, but something just doesn’t click in the big show. I like JoeyT, so don’t get me wrong, but Tyler (hiccups defensively aside) gives a lil depth at the corner. Be interesting to see.

        • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

That would mean Schafer/Doumit for the OF; Pena/Greene for the infield.

  • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

Another non-homer-gasm on radio. That wind must be howling.

  • fireboss

    another wind assisted escape

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Alan I know you’re doing a piece on this, but I’m curious all.. best guess prediction on wins this year for Braves? Ya’ll see 96 again?

    • fireboss

nope i think 89-91 is it

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

I will be revising those guesses, for sure, after this week. I’m now much more pessimistic. 89.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’m pessimistic as well, and months ago when we saw players from other teams getting healthy, and making moves (can you say Nats?), I thought then 90, but not 96. I’m still thinking that, and can only hope we are pleasantly surprised.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

But I’ll tell ya… if the rotation can keep their (*&^^ together, and the Upton brothers and Dan somehow get hot, who knows, right?

      • fireboss

Ifs and buts will drive you nuts… Or as my Daddy said a lot. IF the dog hadn’t stopped to umm .. (*&^^ he’d have caught the rabbit

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

If IFS and BUTS were toys and nuts, we’d all have a merry christmas. ~ Sheldon Cooper.

          • fireboss

Ah an English major in the crowd… :)

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Actually, I’m a sort of a closet nerd, and took a lot of physics in school. Sheldon Cooper is a character who’s a physicist on the Big Bang Theory. :)

          • fireboss

Nerdy myself but i never got into that likely because it’s on cbs…

    • Brandon_Woodworth

      91-71

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        hahaha. Nice differential equation bro.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Where did these “rumors” come from that FW don’t like Gearrin? I’ve heard them, and tossed them some, but I have found no confirmation of this innuendo.

    • fireboss

I don’t know about FW but I believe FG doesn’t like him because I watched how he abused him instead of using him to his best advantage

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Oops meant FG. Edited now. So, still pretty much conjecture then.

        • fireboss

I believe every time I’ve referenced it I said it was my opinion based on observation. I have seen others ask why Gearrin wasn’t used but don’t recall a real source saying it

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah you have, but I’ve seen several other writers hint at it, and was just curious if there were footnotes or quotes.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Gotta snag that, low throw or not at 2nd.

  • fireboss

Gearrin not doing himself any favors

    • http://tomahawktake.com/ carpengui

That could be the source of the alleged FG consternation. Seems that every time he’s close to breaking through, he stinks up the joint and forces the team to exclude him.

      • fireboss

I think this is a chicken egg thing. He makes a mistake then feels the pressure and tries to do more than he actually can and ends up making another mistake that causes more pressure etc. To be in the bigs he has to handle that pressure. He needs a new start somewhere else if he’s to succeed
