Boston Red Sox Vs. Atlanta Braves: Live Game Thread!

The Boston Red Sox travel to the Spring Training home of the Atlanta Braves today, Champion’s Stadium, to take on our beloved team at 1:05 PM EST.  We’re having another Live Thread during the game to discuss the game itself of course, but also recent news, injuries, plans for 2014, and whatever else crosses our singularly, focused minds!

Probables to take the mound today showcase a lefty-righty matchup, as the Atlanta Braves plan to have LHP Alex Wood take the bump, while the Sox will start RHP John Lackey.  As we always say, it’s just Spring, and all pitchers are getting stretched out.  That said, in two starts, Lackey has been eaten up for a whopping 9.39 ERA so far.  The Braves shouldn’t expect a walk in the park from Lackey though, who is coming off a 2013 season where he posted a 3.52 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP with a 10-13 record.  Wood has been very good as well, and Braves’ fans hope he continues to show good command as we enter the 2014 season.

Join Us For Our Live Thread Below

A great deal has happened this Spring season for the Atlanta Braves.  Some of it has been good, while most of it has been news of the dreaded variety.  The Braves aren’t slowing down though, and we could still see a trade or two before the season starts.  Join us in our Live Thread below, and share with us your thoughts about the game, and the 2014 season.

Probables for today’s game: Alex Wood for Atlanta, and John Lackey for the Sox. Thoughts about how well Alex Wood will do this year?

    • fireboss

I suspect Woody will be fine probably 160 or so innings 12-14 wins with run support, health and a little luck

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Unfortunately, I am having to work today, so I cannot watch, only listen. Blacked out on my MLB.tv subscription of course. I can watch via my phone on MLB AtBat, but I don’t have an unlimited data plan. LOL.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wait, I can connect to the corporate wi-fi, but I think they filter for sports. Communists! :)

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Absolutely the LAST year I have an MLB.tv subscription. It’s utterly ridiculous to pay that much, and not be able to watch games just because I live in a zip code that carries the game on my local cable network. Should be outlawed!

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Was able to watch while at work last Sunday, but that’s because the game wasn’t on regular tv! It shouldn’t be an either/or proposition. K, steppin’ down off my soapbox.

    • fireboss

All the more reason to talk up the lawsuit against MLB et al I wrote about last year. No real reason for it except the prohibition against showing commercials out of market which seems a bit archaic in a time where the national networks do it all the time

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Ahh got audio now, and hear Shane playing for a different team, but still giving the Braves fits. haha

  • fireboss

    • fireboss

      Nope not yet

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

May have to settle for stills

        • fireboss

Hard to synchronize stills but yea

Was wondering if the MLB TV library has them

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Wood working well so far

    • fireboss

He looks a little different this year Maybe my eyes playing tricks

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah I notice something too, but cannot put my finger on exactly what it is. Like maybe a less pronounced delivery, arm slot slightly different, something. Have to do some comparisons.

        • fireboss

His load looks more pronounced – he still has that recoil though

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Braves probably already tweaking for their “program to lessen TJ”. haha.

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Problem is, those changes don’t happen over night.

  • fireboss

Scheurholz talking about the extension process

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Wish audio would dub it in.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Doumit up. I have high hopes for good pop in his bat off the bench this year. I loved that get, and still do.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      I jinxed eeem

      • fireboss

He didn’t look like he saw the ball at all out of Lackey’s hand

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

          What’s John hitting.. 95ish?

          • fireboss

            93 or so

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Radio they’re talking about a “new” cutter he’s throwin’

          • fireboss

eh maybe. wouldn’t argue with Sutton hard to pick up a cutter from what dad would have called a running fast ball. I’ll have to watch more closely

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

No Trade Rumors so far on anything Jacob Turner.

    • fireboss

Fish have pretty well killed that talk for today anyway. Seemed an odd choice for team that’s unlikely to win. Better to keep him and leave the option guys down

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah, that makes sense. Plus, my gut tells me that Braves are done with the starting rotation at least.

        • fireboss

JS just said about as much

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Baseball. The opiate of intelligent sports fans.

    • fireboss

Yep watched Kershaw in the replay of that game in Australia. He’s a beast

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah he made the cover of my ESPN Insider magazine. Like to have just a half a Kershaw :)

        • fireboss

Yea I get the magazine but rarely crack it open.

  • fireboss

Lackey with a great play to get woody

  • fireboss

and that one ain;t coming back Simba homer

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Boo Yah! Andrelton’s power is subtle.

    • fireboss

No one thought that was going out

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Radio saying there’s a strong wind blowing out that helped that.

        • fireboss

Yea it was a lazy pop fly that just kept going. Left fielder was going to catch it and it landed 20 feet behind the fence

  • fireboss

Lackey takes one in the back of his thigh throws to first hits F5F in the back

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Turnabout FP

      • fireboss

I bet Lackey’s thigh hurts more than F5F’s back

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Thighs, backs, it’s all dark meat ;)

          • fireboss

A spot on Lackey’s thigh is darker than it was 10 minutes ago

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

One of the few to elude Simba yes, but I’ve noticed him this spring not quite as sharp defensively as we’ve grown accustomed to.

    • fireboss

Double play depth and Victorino waited on Woody’s hook like he was expecting it. Second time through isn;t as smooth as the first

    • daniceleigh

Simba has made a couple of errors this spring, but I attribute it to getting the kinks out etc. as it is ST & all. :) He’ll post another DRS 41 again! Can you believe Chip Caray pulled that stat out?? He’s going to ruin his reputation if he keeps that up lol

      • fireboss

        Reading his cue cards :)

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

hehe Chip has assistants and cheat sheets.

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Well he’s made 3 to be exact, but you’re right – stretching it out. No need to be concerned with the wizard.

  • daniceleigh

After John Schuerholt (sp) talking with Chip et al, do you think Garcia could be history? I got the impression that he wasn’t going to be part of the starting rotation, bc his name wasn’t mentioned at all-
Also, Chris- I don’t understand why you can’t get the game on mlb tv bc I’m in the Atl area & I’m watching it on my Mac. Just curious- & I thought I’d drop in & say hi to you guys as well!

    • fireboss

It wouldn’t surprise me to see him stay in the pen , start or be released. His last two outings haven;t helped him and you are correct that JS didn;t mention him at all

      • daniceleigh

You think that the performances of Schlosser & Thomas along w/ Garcia being iffy have contributed to maybe JS etc letting ole Freddy G go?

        • fireboss

That and Floyd throwing well early. They save money if they dump Garcia before Monday and make it easier to keep Gearrin and Varvaro

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

That and also the fact that Garcia has had control issues, and not just slight ones that would be indicative of a stretching period. We’ve always felt his ability to step up last year was adrenaline. We shall see.

          • fireboss

yea his last two outing he’s been very hittable and walking folks

          • daniceleigh

Thanks. I hope Floyd isn’t pushing it though- I don’t want him coming back too soon. All these arm injuries are disconcerting. Do they really need both Gearrin & Varvarro though??

          • fireboss

Need? Probably not but they’d like to get something for them if they walk and if they put them through waivers they won;t get much

          • daniceleigh

            very true.

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I shall be shocked to see Gearrin much longer. It’s widely rumored that he’s lost any luster from Fredi G that he ever had.

          • daniceleigh

Same here. I like Cory but Fredi just doesn’t use him properly, which is a shame.

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Probably because of my carrier. I don;t know the legal details, but I notice often that when Charter is carrying the games locally in my area, in spring only, that I often am blacked out on MLB.tv. It’s highly annoying, but i don’t mind audio. Refreshing. Agree with Fred below, but I suspect Garcia will be relegated to the pen if not released.

      • daniceleigh

Ahh. Audio is fine for me too. Sorry you had a hard time getting hooked up today though.
        Enjoy!!

      • fireboss
