New York Mets Vs. Atlanta Braves: Live Game Thread!

We’re blessed to have another LIVE game on broadcast television today, as the New York Mets will travel to the Spring Training home of the Braves today, Champion’s Stadium, to take on the Atlanta Braves at 1:05 PM EST on Fox Sports South.  For the second day in a row, we’re having another Live Thread during today’s match to discuss all things Braves’ baseball.

Just like yesterday, the game today features a lefty-righty contest, with the Mets putting lefty John Lannan on the mound, and the Braves bringing veteran righty Freddy Garcia to the bump.

Neither pitcher has performed particularly well so far this spring, and Lannan is coming off a 2013 season where he put up a dismal 7.71 ERA, but missed most of the season due to injury.  Lannan was outrighted by the Philadelphia Phillies, and signed a minor league contract with the Mets.  He’s now competing for a roster spot to replace Johan Santana who tore his shoulder capsule last year.

Garcia has much to prove himself.  Despite stepping up well for the Braves last season, Freddy hasn’t performed nearly as well as hoped for the Braves this Spring.  So far, through 4 games and a little over eleven innings pitched, Garcia has a 6.94 ERA and has struggled with command.  With the rotation issues facing the Braves, it’s important for Garcia to pitch well.  His future with the Braves rides on how well he can muster up and prove he’s worth something to the team.

I don’t need to remind Braves fans of all the struggles the Braves have already faced this Spring.  My grandmother used to say that it’s struggles that define you, and make you who you are.  I’ve found that wisdom to be true, and our hope is that the Braves’ struggles will define them as well, and make them reach for more than anyone expects.  If a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, that can be true of a baseball team as well!

This upcoming season is not too different than last year – in that most were picking the Nationals to easily claim the NL East.  They’re saying the same thing year!  While that may prove true, no one should underestimate the power of tough times to push a team to higher levels of performance.

Join us in our Live Thread below, and share your thoughts.  We don’ t judge, and we love ALL opinions, so get into the mix with us today as the Braves Tomahawk Take it to the Mets!

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Lannan was the probable, but Torres gets the nod instead.

  • Glen Morrow

    What B.J. ??????

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

B.J. Upton, standup triple, compliments of poor fielding in right.

BJ looking like the 2 hole (rocking chair) guy to start the year with JUP down the order

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I can live with that if he keeps showing positive signs.

      • fireboss

The two spot will get a lot of fastballs as long as jason gets on

  • Glen Morrow

Is Chris holding his hand differently ? either way its good results .

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

CJ bam! Taking Torres to school, and showing he aint guaranteed to regress much in 2014. Braves up 1-0

  • fireboss

CJ 2.0 Double looks just like last year BAbip :P

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I believe Chipper has been gone long enough for Chris to get the respect of a simple CJ moniker. Just my .02

    • fireboss

The 2.0 is supposed to be the newer updated version. I had someone with a 2.5 after the ASG last year

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I know, but to me it shows a lack of respect. I guess I shouldn’t infer that is what others mean though. Presumptuous on my part. Sorry

        • fireboss

No need to apologize it started when the team had more Johnsons than anyone else and multiple Chris’ even though they were spelled differently. We could just say Chris

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah it bugged me when it started. hehe.

  • fireboss

Ah looks like your mans Gus makes the team

At least there’s no fat jokes there. That upset me too last year… all the fat laird and fat juans. Those guys are heavy set, but NOT fat! hehe.

      • fireboss

Like teh Fat Juan jokes. He was in better shape than those calling him names

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    • fireboss

There’s a video on “the Onion” like that

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

        Oh, I must see this

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Even a break for Evan

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

All the Braves need to grow gattis-like beards at least, so the club can be “gritty” like Boston, and all blue-collar like and stuff. *dripping sarcasm*

    • fireboss

      That’s his 5 o’clock shadow

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

When Jhey finally gets to remove the jaw-guard, he’ll have to wear face black to stay in the zone, but he’ll wear it on his cheek instead of under the eyes.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    B.J. adjusting much better

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Freeman singles to center, advancing B.J. Runners on 1st and 2, 2 outs. CJ with an opportunity for one or more RBIs

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Poot

#1 seed in the Coif bracket break

  • fireboss

There are many who would send Chip to Rome or Barcelona if he promised to stay

  • Glen Morrow

Houston we have lift off .. Via JUpton

    • fireboss

Tired of folks catching his line drives

  • Glen Morrow

Well Speedy just got caught trying to steal .

  • Glen Morrow

I really felt bad for Uggla last year , I hope he has straighten things out in the off season , so far it’s been a good spring for Dan . Hopefully this are things to come .

    • fireboss

I’m cautiously hopeful after watching the last two games.

      • Glen Morrow

Yeah , I am not holding my breath , but hoping than Dan will turn it around along with B.J.

        • fireboss

If they do this lineup is absolutely scary

          • Glen Morrow

I agree , this lineup only has 2 clogs and that is Dan and B.J if those 2 get it going at a regular pace , look out National League .

  • fireboss

    REV!!!

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Sorry, was cutting my cable company loose, and going with DirecTV.

    • fireboss

      Have you checkbook ready

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Hell of a lot cheaper than Charter!

        • fireboss

          Isn’t everyone?

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

hehe I have no data, but that’s a SOLID guess. They’re all hooligans up to no good, trying to subtly pull the proverbial wool over our bleary eyes.

          • fireboss

Watch for subtle charges they didn’t explain when you signed up for DT. Not so bad if you don;t jump in on their No Fun League deals I hear

          • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah I have lots of experience asking the uncomfortable questions, getting it in writing, or saying “don’t let the door hit you on the way out”

          • fireboss

I’ve had Dish since 97 and been very happy with them but after DirecTV and Bud signed their buddy pact no extra innings. Sop I use MLB TV costs less and quality is up again this year. DirecTV and Dish were both given the chance to pick up our local channels when they were off cable due to price dispute. Dish had them up in 2 weeks, Direct said there wasn’t enough money in our small market. That didn;t set well with me.

Some folks swear by them though and the sports bars all use them for obvious reasons.

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Thomas always reminds me a little of Minor when seen from the rear. Uewww!

    • fireboss

I was trying to decide who he reminded me. Can’t put my finger on it

  • fireboss

So could the Braves trade Laird to a team that lost it’s catcher and use Lerud?

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Other teams would say, “well what about Lerud?”

      • fireboss

Maybe but worth a shot. he’s pretty good behind the plate

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Yeah I agree, and it’s thta veteran presence I still think Atlanta needs behind the plate, even if from the bench :)

          • fireboss

Eddie Perez said his catch and release was faster than anyone in the organization. Makes Bethancourt expendable perhaps?

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

    Frou Frou

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Where is everyone today? It’s my party. I’ll cry if I want to!

    • fireboss

I had a client call with internet down. Bad wireless in her router so I hooked her up hardwire and told her I’d be back after 3:30

He can motor! And Freddie… see that wrist speed. Man he turned on that pitch!

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I’m sitting here laughing myself silly. That Joe comment on dumb and dumber, with Fredi behind chip on the 4 wheeler. Imagine in my mind. Priceless!

    • fireboss

Those two are the odd couple

      • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Reminded me of Chip’s comment last year in Colorado, during cold weather, when those two were in pastel colored winter suits, and Chip said, “Lloyd and Mary Christmas” I think I blew a lung laughing!

    • Glen Morrow

      Here ya go Chris.

  • fireboss

Ernesto showing off his standing vertical leap

  • fireboss

Matt Moore hit be a line drive off Bogarts bat. deflected it with his glove first so not as bad as it could have been

  • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

I cannot recall in MLB any player mid=judging a ball that badly in the outfield

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

Looked like junior girls softball centerfielder

      • fireboss

don’t insult those high school softball gals

    • fireboss

well some things we just choose to forget… I’ve seen some really bad outfield play,

  • fireboss

    Bad News Mutts outfield

  • fireboss

watched most of teh DBacks LA game last night They looked gritty but not very good.. 220 grit maybe I sure miss Prado at times

    • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

      Miss him every game

      • fireboss

Yea I was a big advocate of getting JUP but I also wanted Martin extended for 4 @ 44 but the Braves low balled him ala Hudson and he was traded. Hudson BTW yesterday I think 6 innings 1 earned 2 Ks no walks

        • http://www.tomahawktake.com/ Chris Headrick

One of those cases of, “if i knew then what I know now”

  • fireboss

That oughta be illegal .. 96 heat then an 84 hook brrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • fireboss

    102??? unf

  • fireboss

okay guess I’ll go buy a router and install it
