Braves Designate Jordan Schafer For Assignment
The Atlanta Braves have announced that OF Jordan Schafer has been designated for assignment.
The move comes as no real surprise with the addition of a similar player in Emilio Bonifacio. Left hander Chasen Shreve was also optioned to Gwinnett late last night to make room for James Russell.
Schafer, a product of the Braves farm system, hasn’t shown much of the promise that made him so heralded in the minor leagues. In both stints with the Braves, Schafer slashed just .224/.311/.307 and registered roughly a 0.2 fWAR in 733 plate apperances. His year and a half stint in Houston did not provide more encouraging results.
While Schafer’s value stemmed mostly from his speed (and a little defense), the Braves saw the addition of a similar player as an opportunity to choose Schafer over Ryan Doumit, another Braves bench piece providing no value. Certainley being picked off in the 10th inning of Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers did not help his case.
Bonifacio and Russell will be in uniform to take on the Padres tonight. Stay tuned for my series preview.
