    – should already know the biggest news items of the day:

    • the Braves salvaged 2 of 3 from the Mets with a 6-1 victory behind Mike Minor– beating up on the bullpen late to blow open a closer game than the score looked… but 2/3 is pretty much what we were hoping to see in New York
    • Mike Minor is awesome again… and just in the nick of time.
    • the road trip is done:  2 of 3 in Pittsburgh, 2 of 4 in Cincy, 2 of 3 in New York.  Really can’t complain about that, though there always seems to be a couple that ‘got away’ from us.  But 6-4 overall?  That’s good.
    • Jonny Venters is done… possibly for his career.  We do hope for the best, though this is not good news at all for him.

    I do wish to take a second and highlight our facebook page.  We’re reposting everything from here over on that site, but I’m also throwing in an occasional news item of interest that may not quite be worthy of a full post on this, the main site… or maybe there are days in which I’m just a little lazy and don’t feel like typing 800 words on a topic!

    Time is running out on the Miami Marlins‘ slim wild-card chances, but hope isn’t completely lost with six of their next nine games against the playoff- hopeful Atlanta Braves.

    The problem for the Marlins entering Friday night’s series opener is their top two hitters are scuffling and have struggled mightily against Ervin Santana, who also happens to have won his last six starts at Turner Field.

    Miami (65-67) opened a nine-game trip four games out of the NL’s second wild-card spot, but it’s fallen 5 1/2 off the pace after dropping four of six. The Marlins were outscored 14-3 in losing their final two games to an Angels team battling for the AL West crown.

    ”We’ve got to understand with a month to go, we’ve got to step it up and we’ve got to be able to win ballgames against playoff-caliber teams,” manager Mike Redmond said after Wednesday’s 6-1 loss.

    Atlanta (70-64) would fit that description, trailing San Francisco by 1 1/2 games for the second wild card.
