Atlanta Braves Morning Chop: Play Like a Pirate Day

facebooktwitterreddit

Yes indeedy, mates:  the past 24 hours has been pretty slow for Braves’ news:  no game, and the only player news was about what Chasen Shreve wanted to do on his day off (he asked the Twitter-verse:  bad idea!).  Arrrrrr… pass me my grog!

So in honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, we here at TomahawkTake.com want to urge the Braves team to go out and finish this season by doing something they haven’t done all year:

Play like a Pirate.

About the Pirates

Over the second half of this season, the Pittsburgh Pirates…

  • Lead the NL is Offensive WAR… and it’s not even close (NL-only stats follow)
  • Are 4th in home runs
  • Are best in OPS
  • 2nd in OBP
  • Best in wRC
  • Best in strikeouts (fewest offensively)
  • 2nd in runs scored
  • went from 4th place (3 games over .500) to 2nd (12 games over)
  • hat tip to @AceBallStats

Pirates also are known for taking no prisoners and for terrorizing their opposition with ruthless efficiency.  They are not exactly admired or appreciated for their work, but that also characterizes the Pittsburgh team.

But avast!  These Braves still have a chance… albeit a slim one that’s not up to themselves.  They need to win out the last 10 games – sweep them…. and then hope for help.

Fortunately, Atlanta plays those Pirates for four games early next week.  So it’s high time for this crew to stop playing like a pack of bilge rats and get their ship together!

If they don’t, then some of these players might find themselves set adrift – and none of them wants that, right?

But of course, we can’t end without this:  LET’S GO PIRATES!

  • Braves catcher Evan Gattis has been out since September 7 with strep throat and now the team announced that he’s also been diagnosed with kidney stones.

As someone who recently had a really bad case of strep throat and has heard a few friends tell stories of how awful kidney stones are, I can’t imagine many combos that could be worse.

Oh, one more thing:  play like a “pirate” – don’t play like a Buccaneer!   Arrrrrr….
