Atlanta Braves Morning Chop 10/9
Arizona Fall League Recap
On Wednesday, our Peoria Javalinas fell to the Surprise Saguaros by a score of 8-2 as the starter for Peoria (Jaime Schultz, Rays) was shelled for 5 runs over the first two innings. They cruised to the win after that as Peoria only came up with 6 hits for the day against Keith Couch (Red Sox), et al.
For the Braves’ representatives, Kyle Wren led off and went 0-3 with a walk. He was the only Braves position player in the game yesterday. In something of an Surprise (see what I did there?), Wren was held without a stolen base attempt.
Braves’ reliever Nate Hyatt got to finish up yesterday’s contest, striking out 1 and walking 1 in a scoreless ninth inning of work in front of a capacity crowd of two hundred and thirty-eight enthusiastic fans. Most of them being scouts, I presume. I hope more of you are reading this recap.
Peoria hosts Scottsdale today with Aaron Northcraft on the mound to start for the Javalinas.
Apartments, 2 hotels, retail planned near Braves stadium
CARLA CALDWELL / ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE/BIZJOURNALS.COM
Cobb planning officials on Tuesday approved a rezoning request for a proposed development near the Atlanta Braves new stadium site that is expected to include a five-story apartment complex with 392 apartments, two eight-story hotels with a total maximum of 290 guest rooms, and 80,000 square feet of retail space, the Marietta Daily Journal is reporting.
The proposed development, called Stadium Walk, is planned for a 12.6-acre tract at 4501 Circle 75 Parkway. The development is less than a mile from SunTrust Park, the site of the new Braves stadium, the paper adds.

[snipped a recap of the above article]…
After receiving approval from the Planning Commission in a 5-0 vote, the rezoning request heads to the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Oct. 21.
Tad Leithead, chairman of the Cumberland Community Improvement District, said there is a “perfect storm” in Cobb, consisting of significant investment in county infrastructure, an improving economy and the Atlanta Braves coming to town.
Leithead said although economic activity was already in progress in the area before the Braves announced it would build a $672 million stadium near the intersection of Interstates 75 and 285, the move is a “catalyst that I believe is accelerating” the process.
“I think we took a 10-year vision, and with the Braves coming, turned that into a three-year vision,” he said.
At a Planning Commission meeting, which began with a room full of citizens concerned over several new developments, Stadium Walk drew no opposition.

Planning Commission Chairman Michael Terry had some concerns about parking, asking whether the parking deck and the 148 planned surface level spaces would be enough to accommodate the volume of residents, hotel room guests and shoppers. Terry said the commission had the same issue with another development it heard recently.
“That was a concern we had for your neighbors down the street, the Braves. I’m sure you’ve heard of them,” he said.
[ Editor’s Note: no matter what you may think about the Cobb County entanglement/public monies being spent on the stadium project, these stories represent proof of what was being promised: new development and ultimately new tax revenues arising from the stadium project. ]
