Braves make baseball operations hires, realign scouting department

STAFF WRITERS /  FOXSPORTS.COM

The Braves’ baseball operations department has a new look with some familiar names.

Interim general manager John Hart announced Tuesday that Gordon Blakeley and Roy Clark have both been named as special assistant to the general manager, while Brian Bridges has been promoted to scouting director.

Also, Dave Trembley has been named director, player Development and Jonathan Schuerholz has been named as assistant director, player development.

Blakeley was with the Yankees for more than two decades, becoming the farm director in 1998. He also erved as vice president of international and professional scouting, senior vice president of player personnel, and since 2008 as a special assistant to the general manager.

He is credited with signing the likes of Robinson Cano, David Ortiz, Alfonso Soriano, Alex Rodriguez, Jason Varitek, Jose Contreras, Orlando Hernandez and Hideki Matsui.

“Gordon is one of the elite talent evaluators in the game.” Hart said. “Adding someone with his experience and success to our organization is important for us.”

Clark spent 22 years with the Braves before becoming assistant GM and vice president of player personnel for the Nationals from 2010-13. He spent this past season working with the Dodgers as a scouting crosschecker.

“Roy played a vital role in the Braves’ unprecedented run of division titles for more than two decades,” Hart said. “It is a pleasure to bring him back home as we look to begin another run.”

In Trembley, the Braves bring on a veteran with 30 years in professional baseball, including 20 as a minor league manager. He was with the Astros from 2013-14, serving as the third base coach in ’13 and the bench coach this past season. Before going to Houston, he was a minor league field coordinator with the Braves for two years.

AFL:  Peoria Destroys Scorpions, Northcraft Impresses

The Peoria Javalinas (2-1) won a “laugher” over the Scottsdale yesterday in their third AFL contest, 11-2.  Braves’ AAA pitcher Aaron Northcraft went 3 innings, giving up just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2.  He threw 44 pitches, 24 of them credited as strikes.  Despite just going the 3 innings, he was given credit for the win (official scorer’s discretion).

Ryne Harper was part of the relief corps yesterday and got hit a bit… the only Javalinas pitcher so treated.  In 2 innings of work, he gave up both of the Scottsdale runs via 4 hits.  He actually looked better than all that:  one of those hits was a homer, and he struck out 3 while walking none.

Edward Salcedo, playing right field for his second game, went 1 for 3 (a double), scoring a run, knocking in a run, walking twice (that’s noteworthy), with one strikeout. In short, he filled up all of the columns on the score card.
