Chipper Jones Gives Insight On New Atlanta Braves’ Hitting Coach

On September 30th Greg Walker informed the Braves that he will be stepping down from his position as hitting coach for the Atlanta Braves.  This seemed to be a forgone conclusion following the season with all the struggles the Braves had at the plate.

Walker, who came to the Braves organization in 2012, called the 2014 season “A huge disappointment….Especially when a majority of the issues came on my side of the ball.  We went into the season with expectations, which we created by the season we had last year with basically the same players.”

The Braves as a team hit .232 and averaged 2.9 runs over their final 56 games…and went 21-35.  They hit a majors-worst .206 in September with 59 runs in 25 games…and went 7-18 in September.

Atlanta struggled to get the timely hits and score runs but that era is over…now it’s time to move on.

Mark Bowman gave us his thoughts on who the Braves could be interested in to fill this extremely difficult position.  Charlie Manuel, Jim Thome, Rick Eckstein, Milt Thompson and Terry Pendleton were names he brought up.  Eckstein and Thompson would be the only names out of those who could be a possibility.

We’d love to see the Braves go after a hitting coach thats approach isn’t the home run ball or bust.  I think I’m in the same boat as many when I say small ball is preferred and take the homers when they come.  If the Braves continue with the amount of strikeouts they have totaled over the last few years, I may not have any more hair to pull out.

Folks have been saying the name Chipper Jones for the hitting coach position since he retired but I don’t think he’s ready to return to the burden of the travel just yet.

He did however give his insight on who he thinks the Braves should hire on Tuesday afternoon on Twitter….
