  • A late burst by the Mesa team blew it open last night as Peoria (2-6-1) fell to the bottom of the standings last night in Arizona Fall League action.

Oddly enough, Edward Salcedo went 3 for 4 with 1 double in a burst of his own last night.  Ultimately, that didn’t matter to the Peoria offense as he (somehow) failed to score despite teammate Jacob Wilson also going 3-for-4 right behind him.  That pair accounted for 6 of the 9 Javalinas hits.  Salcedo nearly doubled his hit total for the AFL and raised his average from .160 to .240.  Ah, the beauty of small sample sizes.

Salcedo and Ryne Harper were the only Braves’ farmhands to get into the game last night.  Harper threw a perfect 7th inning, recording 2 strikeouts in a 10 pitch inning.  As things turned out, he probably should have also gone back out for the 8th:  the next Javalinas hurler got rocked for 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk – two of those hits leaving the yard.

Peoria faces the Salt River Rafters tonight.

With the flurry of front office activity that accompanied the departure of Frank Wren over the first 15-20 days into the John Hart era, there are still two large unknowns remaining:

    • Who will be the GM
    • Who will be the hitting coach

The General manager situation seems to be straightforward:  John Coppolella or Dayton Moore, the latter of which is still busy for the next week or so.  Seeing as John Hart has – maybe, maybe not – declined the opportunity to stay in that position, you would think that the job would offered to Coppolella – if he were going to get it.  Seeing that this hasn’t happeneded yet is why I am thinking that the team still wants to give the job to Dayton Moore – which would be a mistake, in my view.

Meanwhile, it seems that nobody wants to be the Braves’ hitting coach.  We’ve been turned down now more often than beds at the Omni hotel.  If you wish to see more on that, see Fred’s piece on the subject from this morning.
