Braves Make Offer to Tomas

To put a cap on your Sunday, this comes from Peter Gammons:

So what does this mean?

  • First, the Braves have entered the bidding for Yasmani Tomas, and apparently entered the bidding in a big way.  Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com posted a blog where he stated the Braves were front runners along with the  San Diego Padres for Tomas’ services.

Second, the signing of Tomas would not require a move of

Evan Gattis

and/or

Justin Upton

to complete.  Braves beat writer David O’Brien tweeted this about the same time as Gammons’ tweet:

Braves fans have to be happy with the excitement so far this offseason, but there has been one piece of news to come from the Sanchez piece about Tomas that has flown under the radar.  While Tomas is still talking about a 5-7 year deal in the $15M per season annual range, teams have reported that his camp is now considering something for more money per season and a shorter term, which may appeal to more suitors.

Right now, the process is still early as the decision on Tomas isn’t expected until at least the Winter Meetings, which start December 7th in San Diego.  Regardless, this is very intriguing to see the Braves jump in with both feet into the Cuban marketplace, an area that many criticized the Braves for being seemingly absent from in Frank Wren’s time as GM.
