Braves Rumors:  Justin Upton or Evan Gattis Headed to the A’s?

HAYDEN KANE / FANSIDED.COM

The Oakland A’s already made one big trade this MLB off-season, and now they might have their eyes on a deal with the Atlanta Braves for either Justin Upton or Evan Gattis.

. Besides trading their best player, that meant that the A’s traded away a right-handed power hitter.

Less than 24 hours after that deal is done, and the A’s already have their eyes on potential replacements for that power in their lineup.

The Atlanta Braves, like the A’s, are making significant moves to retool their roster this off-season. The biggest move prior to the Josh Donaldson trade was the deal that centered around sending Jason Heyward to the St. Louis Cardinals for starting pitcher Shelby Miller. Now it sounds like these two active front offices, Oakland and Atlanta, might be talking to each other about a deal.

[ Editor’s Note:  This writer’s take illustrates the problems with twitter as a source for breaking news.  It’s about punctuation… the comma.

The original tweet that started this – and led to this earlier post – indicated that discusions were “about Justin Upton, Evan Gattis“.  Does that mean “one of these” or “both of these”?  Hayden Kane thinks “one”. My own interpretation is both – based on a separate tweet from Susan Slusser.  This is admittedly less likely, as the smaller deal is more likely in general.  MLB Trade Rumors was leaning that way, too, but edited its story to hedge its bets “it is not even apparent that both players would be under consideration in the same deal“).

By itself, Justin Upton for Jeff Samardzija makes some sense, but also overloads the Oakland outfield… unless a player like Josh Reddick comes back.  Some of the other issues that a Gattis/Upton deal would create are mentioned in our earlier story.

We’ll have to see if the light of a new day continues this rumor… or kills it. ]
