Carpenter and Shreve traded

Per Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors, the Braves have traded David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve to the New York Yankees for Manny Banuelos.

Why would they do this deal?

The Braves acquired yet another high-upside arm in Banuelos, who has been coming back from Tommy John surgery since 2012.  Banuelos was rated as a top-50 prospect before 2011 and 2012, being rated as high as #13 by MLB.com before the 2012 season.  Carpenter was in his first year of arbitration, and though his projected salary was not exactly high, to be able to trade two relievers for a potential high-upside #5 starter is understandable.

Now what?

Alan posted a very intriguing article regarding a possible trade for David Price, and now with high upside arms like Banuelos, Max Fried, and Tyrell Jenkins added to the farm system, this could precurse a significant trade, or the Braves may be stocking up with incredibly high-end arms to go along with their current rotation and guys like Lucas Sims in order to build one of the most incredible pitching staffs that Atlanta has witnessed, and with this team’s history (including the winningest LHP and RHP since the dead ball era spending significant portions of their career as a Brave), that’s saying a lot!
