Evan Gattis Says Goodbye

As Fred wrote about on Wednesday afternoon, the Atlanta Braves traded away Evan Gattis to the Houston Astros for third baseman Rio Ruiz and pitchers Mike Foltynewicz and Andrew Thurman.

Right handed pitcher Foltynewicz was Astros number three prospect.  The right handed throwing, left handed hitter, Ruiz was their number seven.  Right handed pitcher Thurman was Houston’s seventeenth prospect.

The 28-year-old catcher, left fielder, designated hitter is a native of Texas and will probably be looking forward to moving back.  He went to Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas and attended the University of Texas of the Permain Basin in Odessa Texas.  Gattis was reportedly already in Texas when he received the word that a possible trade was on the horizon.  He soon found himself in a doctors office receiving a physical for the Astros.

Gattis spent two seasons in the MLB with the Braves, he hit a slash line of .253/.304/.487, had 43 home runs, 117 RBIs and 38 doubles.

He will join a team that could be on the upswing in the AL.  Astros have many young players and lots of top prospects.  The lineup will consist of youngsters George Springer, Chris Carter and now Gattis…that will be many homers but quite possibly many K’s.

“Should be really good for all of us,” Gattis said about the chances of a 3-4-5 lineup with Carter and Springer.  “We are on the rise and I think potential is there and then, you know, it’s just a few extra games of margin — the difference is so small between a really good team and a .500 team. … I’m anxious to talk to (Jose Altuve) about hitting and just kind of figure that guy out a little bit.”

Gattis’ longtime girlfriend Kimberly Waters spoke on behalf of Evan on twitter about the trade.
