Andrelton Simmons added to Atlanta Braves Caravan appearances Monday in Birmingham

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note:  If you’re around the surrounding areas of Birmingham, Alabama and you have some time off, it’s recommend spending your afternoon at the Academy Sports.  Simmons will be there signing autographs and talking with the fans.  The Braves Caravan continues Wednesday in Montgomery with pitcher Tyrell Jenkins (we received him in the Jason Heyward trade).

Atlanta shortstop Andrelton Simmons has been added to the roster of players traveling to Birmingham as part of the Braves Caravan on Monday.

Simmons joins former Hoover High School and Alabama star Ross Wilson, currently a minor-leaguer with the Braves; reliever Ian Thomas and Braves alumni Albert Hall and Wes Helms. Hall, a Birmingham native, played for Atlanta from 1981-88.

The Braves Caravan stops at Academy Sports and Outdoors at the Village at Lee Branch from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday, giving fans an opportunity to meet and get autographs from players. Earlier in the day, the players will present a “No Place for Hate” program at a local school.

Heyward & Matheny on their Jersey Number Switch

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note:  The St. Louis Cardinals must be extremely excited about their new acquisition this offseason – Jason Hayward.  JHey will fit very nicely into the Cardinals lineup and will probably be another Braves killer.  St. Louis has seemed to always have our number in the past century and it will probably continue – at least for the next two years.

The Cardinals will have quite a few new jersey numbers coming in the 2015 season. The two most prominent are new outfielder Jason Heyward and manager Mike Matheny. Heyward, who has always worn #22 with the Atlanta Braves, will wear that same number with the Cardinals. Mike Matheny has worn #22 since he took over as Cardinals manager in 2012. Matheny is giving up his jersey for Heyward, who has worn #22 as a tribute to a high school friend who died while the two were still in high school.

Matheny will switch to #26, the number worn by Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal. Matheny asked for #26 to honor a family friend’s son who recently passed away. Rosenthal will wear #44 in 2015. Here’s Heyward and Matheny commenting on their new numbers.
