Atlanta Braves: Toss It Back Tuesday

Atlanta Braves history is showered by fond memories, a rich tradition and a family bound.

For this weeks “Toss It Back Tuesday” we take a look at the July 24, 2013 game where the Braves were taking on the New York Mets.

Atlanta came into the game with a 56-44 record compared to a less-talented Mets team which was 44-52.  On the mound to start the game for the Mets was Jeremy Hefner and for the Braves, it was Tim Hudson.  Hudson was impressive early and often going 7.2 innings with nine strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed.  But it was that second out in the bottom of the 8th inning that we all remember quite well.

While the Braves led 6-0 in the bottom of the 8th, Eric Young Jr. was at the plate.  Young hits a slow dribbler to Braves first base, Freddie Freeman, and while Hudson tries to cover first his ankle gets stepped on.

Though most will probably not click on this link, below is the video of that night.

The diagnostic from the event was a broken right ankle, ending his season.  That horrible, freak accident was the end to Hudson career in Atlanta.

Obviously after this happened, many people blamed Young for this injury.  He took a lot of backlash over what happened on the field and he probably didn’t deserve it.  You can tell by the video he never meant for this to happen.

Tim and his wife Kim never did.

Here is a tweet that Kim sent to Young the day after this happened.

It’s unknown how much these family kept in touch over the past few years but the Hudson family sent their best wishes on Twitter this morning to Young.  He is currently competing for the Braves starting center field position.

The Hudson family is a class act and I wish they were still in Atlanta.
