Glavine Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

The Atlanta Sports Council, an organization for the Atlanta Metro area that is devoted to bringing major sporting events to the city, bestowed a lifetime achievement award to the Braves Hall of Fame pitcher.

From the January announcement:

The former Atlanta Brave will receive the Atlanta Sports Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award on March 5, 2015, at The Fox Theatre.

Former Atlanta Brave and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Glavine will receive the Atlanta Sports Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award Presented by Coca‐Cola at the Atlanta Sports Awards on March 5, 2015, at The Fox Theatre. Tickets for the event go on sale Thursday, Jan. 15 at www.atlantasportsawards.com.

The last Major League pitcher to win 20 games in three consecutive years, Glavine was an integral part of the pennant-winning Braves teams of the 1990s.

“Tom was a key part in the defining years for the Braves, with his three consecutive 20-win seasons, Cy Young Awards and World Series victory,” said Dan Corso, executive director of the Atlanta Sports Council. “But, his contributions to Atlanta extend far beyond baseball, and that’s why he has been chosen to receive our Lifetime Achievement award.”

Since 1992, Glavine has hosted an annual “Spring Training” event to benefit the Georgia Transplant Foundation. The event has raised more than $4.3 million to provide essential services to Georgia’s organ transplant community.

“I’m honored to receive this award and follow so many Atlanta sports greats who have won it before me,” said Glavine. “My time with the Braves was very special, and I’m blessed to continue to call Atlanta home. I appreciate all Atlanta has provided me and my family, and we’re privileged to continue to give back to a community which has been so good to us.”
