Atlanta Braves Payroll for Opening Day

John Hart hasn’t exactly made this very easy – but hopefully this chart is accurate (now much more so thanks to somebody paying better attention than I)… or at least close enough.

The Highlights

More from Tomahawk Take

  • I include bonuses when they are paid, rather than pro-rating them across the entire duration of a contract.  So that will make for some differences between this chart and others.
  • Speaking of the Cot’s site, they show that the Diamondbacks are paying Atlanta $6.8 million to cover a large portion of Trevor Cahill‘s salary.  Most reports suggest that $6.5 million changed hands, and this is the number I used – all applied to 2015.  The difference is Cahill’s buyout price for 2016 of $300K.
  • Dan Uggla is counted with his 2015 money minus the major-league minimum that will come back from the Nationals.  However, the Braves paid that to him in 2014 as part of his release, so you could choose to lower the actual 2015 payroll by that amount shown.
  • Carlos Quentin has a contract buyout clause, but two reports I found indicate that it has to vest to become valid… and it cannot do so.  Even so, that would apply to 2016.
  • No, Dian Toscano still isn’t here – and won’t be paid for the absence (though it’s clearly not his fault that he can’t get a entry visa).  But his contract is included nonetheless.
  • Many players have unspecified incentive/performance bonuses; none of those are included.
  • “DL” means a player is on the disabled list; “XDL” refers to the extended/60-day DL.  While Joey Terdoslavich is on the DL, expect him to be optioned to Gwinnett once he is eligible; that due to the presence of Cameron Maybin.  So technically, that major league minimum represents his annual salary, though it won’t last since he will be sent back down.

Bottom line:  I show the Braves at $98,424,812 for 2015.
