The offense showed up in a huge way on Tuesday night as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins on 12-2.

It took the Braves 11 games in 2014 to score double-digit runs and only had seven games all year that they hit that feat.

Atlanta had fourteen hits as Andrelton Simmons and Freddie Freeman each had three hits.

“We had a good time swinging the bats tonight,” Freeman said after the game.  “We kept it going from the first inning to the last.”

Alex Wood picked up his first win of the season.  He went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and had three walks.  He picked up his first win of the season.  Wood was handed a seven run lead by the offense before even throwing a pitch.

“Yeah, that wasn’t what I was expected,” Wood told reporters.  “It was 40, 45, 50 minutes before I even threw a first pitch.  I had an AB before I even got out there.”

“Woody wasn’t his best, it was a hard 85 pitches to get through there,” Fredi Gonzalez said.  “I think the long first inning didn’t get him going.”

It’s tough to go out early in a game like that with a huge lead.  Pitchers can’t really pitch the game they intended to pitch because everyone is wanting more fastballs and strikes.  But obviously we can’t complain about hitting through the lineup in the first inning.

The Braves got started in the first when Marlins starter Mat Latos walked Eric Young Jr.  A leadoff walk is never good and it proved to be true once again.  Nick Markakis drove in Young, then Freeman drove in Markakis.  Christian Bethancourt had a great line drive double to right-center field.  Chris Johnson had a double of the wall….etc, etc…

“The thing that I liked about the whole game was that we didn’t give any at-bats away, even at the end,” Gonzalez said.  “Guys kept grinding pitch after pitch.  No at-bats given away.”

Braves bullpen did a great job on Tuesday Brandon Cunniff, Cody Martin and Juan Jaime totaled four innings pitched with zero runs, one hit, two walks and had six strikeouts.

Here is a little recap of the Braves first inning…

It was well known that Freeman struggled last year against the Miami Marlins.  In two games in 2015, he is 4-9 (.444) at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.  What isn’t to impress so far is that Freeman has three strikeouts.

“It seems like I’m getting a hit or I’m striking out right now,” Freeman said.  “It’s a work in progress, I feel pretty good at the plate right now.  I’m just working through all the little things that I kept swinging and missing at but I’m feeling good at the plate and hopefully I can continue that tomorrow.”

The Braves complete the series with the Marlins on Wednesday.  Shelby Miller will pitch for the Braves and Tom Koehler is scheduled to pitch for the Marlins.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET.
