Game Recap: New York Mets defeat Atlanta Braves 3-2

Who are these Mets?? Or is this the true 2015 Atlanta Braves?

Down go the Braves again. Mets defeat the Braves 3-2 on Wednesday night in New York.

Positives: A.J. Pierzynski went 3-3 and a walk, Andrelton Simmons had an RBI single, Eric Stults went six great innings giving up one run on four hits, Eric Young Jr. hits a triple, but that’s all.

“I thought Stults pitched really, really well. He did a nice job changing speeds and doing everything he could to keep us in the ballgame,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said after the game. “We had a good chance to win the ball game, but we didn’t get the balls to drop in.”

Negatives

Jim Johnson

again – yes, a few unfortunate things happened with the a bad call and the hit between first and second –

Freddie Freeman

continues to struggle going 0-3 and lowers his batting average to .245,

Juan Lagares

makes the ridiculous catch robbing

Jace Peterson

in the 7th inning that is below.

This is the play that won the ball game for the Mets. Yes, Wilmer Flores hit the home run in the bottom of the 7th inning, but this catch changed the momentum for the Mets. If Lagares doesn’t catch this ball, it’s at least a double for Peterson with no outs already leading 2-1.

“They made some plays,” Gonzalez said. “Lagares made one of the best plays I’ve ever seen made.”

Instead we head to the 7th inning with a 2-1 lead and Flores hits a home run to left off Cody Martin. Everyone’s favorite relief pitcher, Johnson, gives up three walks, two hits, a run and the lead in the 8th inning.

“I think the bullpen has been used the right way,” Fredi said as he talked about Johnson’s performance. “It’s tough to be successful for anyone when you walk people. Especially the leadoff guy late in games.”

The Mets have now won 10 games in a row, while the Braves are 3-5 since winning their first six games.

Thursday’s game will start at 1:00pm ET and will feature Julio Teheran versus Bartolo Colon.
