The Atlanta Braves were defeated once again by the New York Mets on Thursday afternoon 6-3.  The Braves are now 8-7 for the 2015 season and 3-6 in their last nine games.

The Mets got on the board early in this game as Daniel Murphy hit a base clearing double  that scored three runs in the 1st inning.  The Braves climbed back in the 2nd inning when Andrelton Simmons hit a line drive to centerfield that scored A.J. Pierzynski.  He was originally called out at home but the Braves challenged this play and it was overturned.

Atlanta got back on the scoreboard in the 4th inning when Nick Markakis started the inning with a double.  Freddie Freeman followed him with a single and then Pierzynski hit a ball to second base.  Instead of turning the double play, Murphy tried to get Makakis out at third, but failed.  This loaded the bases with no outs.  Simmons singled and Jace Peterson hit a sac fly to tie the game.

Julio Teheran started the game for the Braves, but didn’t have a day to remember.  He walked five batters, allowed three hits and four runs in 4.1 innings.

More from Tomahawk Take

“I’m surprised we stayed as close as it was because they had baserunners everywhere,” Braves manager

Fredi Gonzalez

said.  “Usually when you have that, someone is going to split a gap and score three or four runs. I think we ended with more hits than they did, but that’s not how you keep score.”

Gonzalez was correct on both fronts…Braves had eight hits compared to the Mets six and baseball games are not won by the amount of hits you have.

New York scored in the 5th inning because of a single and three walks.  Then again in the 7th when they piled on two runs off Luis Avilan.

Mets have now won 11 straight games and are 13-3 in 2015.

“They’ve got a pretty good combination going right now,” Gonzalez told reports.  “Their starters don’t give up any walks, they throw strikes and their run differential is unbelievable.  They are playing OK, but I think today we just let them hang around.”

Mets starting pitching gave up only one walk on Thursday and that was in the ninth inning…compared to the Braves eight walks.  In this series, the Braves had 17 walks and then Mets had nine.

In 15 games, Braves starters have only pitched six innings in six games.  Not something you want from your starting pitchers.

“I’m not concerned because it’s so early, but you want your starters to go deep in ball games,” Gonzalez.  “I’m not worried about our offense, I’m worried about our pitching and our bullpen a little bit right now.”
