Bruce’s pair of triples leads Reds to victory over Braves

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Atlanta Braves lose to the Reds 8-4 on Saturday afternoon.  This was game three of a four game series.  The Braves will look to even the series on Sunday as Julio Teheran will face up against Johnny Cueto.  Game starts at 1:35pm ET at Turner Field.

The Braves cut the lead to 4-2 on a home run by Cameron Maybin in the fifth, but the Reds answered right back with Byrd’s home run. When the Braves cut the lead to 6-3 in the seventh, Cozart added a two-run blast in the ninth to put things out of reach.

“We talk about the shutdowns,” said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. “When we score, we don’t want the other team to come out and score.”

Eric Stults (1-2) took the loss for the Braves, giving up six runs in seven innings.

Atlanta Braves Rumors

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note:  The Braves signed veteran pitcher Matt Capps in early February in hopes he could rebound his career after spending the past two seasons in the minors.  He hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2012 with the Minnesota Twins.  In April, he was released by the Braves and then resigned two days later.  Atlanta released the 31-year-old on Saturday.

The Braves have released veteran reliever Matt Capps, according to the International League transactions page. Capps, a former closer for the Pirates, Nationals and Twins, last appeared in the big leagues in 2012. He pitched just 12 minor-league innings in the last two seasons in the Indians system while dealing with shoulder issues, and he had not yet appeared in a game in 2015.

Chad Billingsley to start for Phillies Tuesday against Braves; David Buchanan optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Chad Billingsley hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2013, but he will once again be pitching in the MLB.  The 30-year-old will be taking on the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field on Tuesday night at 7:10pm ET.

Tuesday night, Billingsley will pitch in his first major league game since April 15, 2013, according to reports. He’ll take right-hander David Buchanan’s spot in the Phillies rotation with Buchanan being optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley Saturday afternoon.

Following his fourth, and ultimately final, rehab start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley Thursday, Billingsley was asked what it would mean to make his next start at the major league level.

“It’d be awesome,” Billingsley said in a transcript provided by the IronPigs. “It’s been a long road with a lot of hard work and a lot of grinding. Just to be pitching at a big league field again and being back out there would be awesome.”
