The Atlanta Braves came into Friday night’s ball game with a 26-27 record and following a 10-game road trip that left everyone stretching their heads about the bullpen situations.  Braves leave Friday with a 26-28 record while the Pirates now have a 30-24 record.

The Braves had chances to win probably six or seven games during the road trip, but instead only won four games and caused many frustrations.

Baseball is a great sport to say, “you know what, we got beat…let’s move on” because typically you play the next day.  With a much needed off day on Thursday, the Braves came back home to Turner Field to take on the Pittsburg Pirates.

The Pirates have been on fire recently winning eight of their last 10 and 11 out of the last 13 games…also, they haven’t lost in June yet (three game sweep of the San Francisco Giants).  Now have won 12 of their last 14 games.

Atlanta’s bullpen didn’t singlehandedly lose the game on Friday, but they didn’t help.

The bullpen gave up six runs on seven hits in four innings of work.  Trevor Cahill gave up three runs, Luis Avilan gave up two runs and believe it or not Brandon Cunniff was able to get two outs and didn’t give up a run.  Nick Masset pitched the 9th inning and allowed one run on two hits.

In the month of June, the Braves bullpen has pitched 11 innings and have given up 13 runs.

Braves starter, Williams Perez didn’t have hit best outing of his career – he gave up five hits, four runs and had five walks…one of those walks was to the pitcher.  The Braves did have the lead (3-1) until the 5th inning when Perez gave up three runs.

Avilan took the loss for the Braves, his first loss of the 2015 season.  Pirates starter Charlie Morton (former Brave) left Friday with the W.

Offensively?

Huge night from Cameron Maybin has he continues to stay hot at the plate. He added three hits with an RBI and a run scored.  Andrelton Simmons, Freddie Freeman, Todd Cunningham and Pedro Ciriaco all had two hits.  And this isn’t a joke…every batter in the starting lineup (besides the pitcher) had at least one base hit!

Braves totaled eight runs off 14 hits on Friday evening…something we should actually be very happy about.  The offense is clicking right now, it’s a shame our pitching staff can not help out.

PS: The Pirates had four errors on Friday night…yup, four!

Pirates beat the Braves 10-8 in game one.

Saturday’s matchup will be Julio Teheran against Jeff Locke starting at 7:10pm ET.
