The Atlanta Braves defeated the Boston Red Sox, in the third game of four, 5-2 on Wednesday night.  Alex Wood did a great job overall on the mound for the Braves except for one pitch.  That pitch resulted in a solo bomb by Mike Napoli in the 6th inning.  The Braves battled back late in the 6th, 7th and 8th to take the win.

Cameron Maybin continued to swing a hot bat and went 2-5 on Wednesday with an RBI and a run scored.  Juan Uribe also contributed with two big hits and Pedro Ciriaco had a huge game going 3-4 with two RBIs.

Alex Wood pitched six innings giving up one earned run, two runs, two walks and had seven strikeouts.  He didn’t pick up the win, but really pitched well.

The bullpen for the Braves shut down the Red Sox.  They pitched three solid innings while only giving up three hits and zero runs.  Nick Masset pitched the 7th inning and picked up the win.  Jason Grilli came into the game in the 9th and got the save.

But the big news was Braves superstar Freddie Freeman.  Freeman left the game in the 7th inning for no obvious reasons.  Twitter was going insane and everyone was scouting other teams rosters for a possible trade destination.  Watching the folks on twitter was comical, but now they can all take a deep breath.

“We took him out of the game because of a right wrist sprain,” Fredi Gonzalez said after the game.  “We’re calling it day-to-day.  He saw a specialist here because he’s been battling it since the Mets series.  We’ve been monitoring it and he’s not taking BP, just getting loose, but today it bothered him.”

So we finally got word after about an hour of not knowing anything…Freeman has a sprained right wrist and will probably return on Friday against the Mets.

Gonzalez was asked about him playing and why he kept playing through the injury…

“That was the deal I made with him, I said I’ll let you play until I see that it starts bothering you and today was worse.  We had our hand specialist here and saw him.  Hopefully it’s just a day-to-day and it claims down and we get him back in the lineup.”

Gonzalez was asked when this injury happened…

“It was that swing in New York before he got the RBI single to tie it and he kind of tweaked it a little but he stayed in the game and tied it.”

Freddie Freeman spoke after the game about the injury…

“Yeah, it happened on Saturday when I got the base hit to tie the game.  It was the swing right before that.  It was a funky, weird swing just trying to foul it off.  I felt it right there and just tried to play through it and gut it out until Sunday, but I just couldn’t make it.”

“I was just trying to make it until Sunday to get an injection after the game with the off day on Monday, but unfortunately it takes a lot for me to come out of the game.  I got an injection after I came out of the game so I’ll probably be missing tomorrow and hopefully be back on Friday.  Hopefully with treatment tomorrow, I’ll be able to be back for the Mets series because that was the original plan to get it done today and it would take 48 hours…that would be the start of the game versus the Mets.”

Below is the at-bat where he acquired the injury.  A few slow-motion replay shots a few seconds into the video shows not the best swing from Freeman…though it was an outside pitch.  Since that AB, Freeman was 3-16 at the plate.
