It’s a good day when Atlanta beats a first place team.  It’s better what that team is the Nationals, particularly in walk-off fashion.  The trifecta happens when they leave the city ticked off.

All of this was caused when Cameron Maybin bounced a super ball over the head of third baseman Yunel Escobar, who was certain that the ball was foul… even though his eyes were pointed at the sky at the time.  Max Scherzer was also certain that it was foul… despite his poor angle.  The only person on the field who really had a decent look was the third base umpire… and of course that was C.B. Bucknor.  They say that when there’s a weak defender on the field, the ball will find you.  Apparently that goes for umpires as well.

That said, even if there had been a replay review of this call (for some rule-based reason, this was not allowed?), it’s a pretty good bet that the answer would have come back as “inconclusive.”  There was no camera embedded in the ground, pointing straight up, so failing that, every other angle would have been… on an angle.  This would force a guess on whether the ball’s path crossed third base in fair territory while it was still 10-12 feet in the air.

But the result?  Atlanta wins and Washington is annoyed.  That makes me happy.
