Atlanta Braves Dilemma: Jonny Gomes

facebooktwitterreddit

For the Atlanta Braves, it’s probably fair to assume that Jonny Gomes hasn’t quite panned out like they had hoped. I’ll admit too, I am a little disappointed that he hasn’t been able to contribute more.

However, I’d like to argue that Gomes’ presence in the clubhouse probably far exceeds his presence on the field. A personality like his and the experience he brings, it’s about the only thing that helps me accept the spot he fills on the roster.

He also gives you 110% every time he steps foot in the ballpark, everyday. You can’t deny that, and you have to respect that part of his game.

The truth is, he just hasn’t had the opportunities many thought he would have. In the early stages of the season, the Braves were facing nothing but right-handed hurlers. Gomes was brought on to be depth off the bench and start against the lefties.

He was also brought in to be that veteran voice, too. I think Gomes and A.J. Pierzynski have done that well. Which brings me to the question on everyone’s mind — Will the Braves seek a trade for Jonny?

Gomes has a team friendly deal right now. He is guaranteed this year $4,000,000 AND has a vesting option for 2016. That option is worth $3,000,000. What’s the vesting option? Good question.

The option unlocks at 325 plate appearances. He stands at 166, just over halfway there. According to MLBTR, it will be close.

“If Gomes receives 325 PA, his $3MM option for 2016 will become guaranteed.  He’s just over halfway there with 166 plate appearances, so this one may come right down to the wire”. – MLBTR

So … What does Atlanta do?

Do they search for trades now? Or do they ride it out and see if he reaches 325 PA’s? If he reaches 325, he is guaranteed next year at $3M.

It’s quite the dilemma, isn’t it? I love Gomes’ leadership and personality, especially in the clubhouse. I love his attitude and day in and day out hustle. If only his performances matched. I understand, he has been limited in his opportunities. But when he has had them, it seems like he just keeps missing the knock of that opportunity.

If a trade is in the cards, then who I ask, could be possible suitors? My thoughts are Gomes heads back to the AL. Best used as DH, Jonny could potentially bring back a decent reward.

Does this in any way hurt his trade value? Does it help it? Will it even happen? Of course, this will be up to the Braves. Knowing the direction this team is heading, and the obvious shift to bolstering the farm, I see an exit for Gomes in the near future.

Let us know what your thoughts are on Gomes, or any other player you think Atlanta may be shopping in the next couple of weeks?
