Atlanta Braves Freddie Freeman Could Begin Rehab Very Soon

Atlanta Braves first baseman, Freddie Freeman, has been sidelined since June 17 with a right wrist injury.  This injury caused the 25-year-old to end his consecutive streak of games played at 234 which dated back to September 24, 2013.

Freeman told reporters this weekend that remaining on this disabled list is “killing me”.

The injury to his wrist has been very frustrating to him, the Braves organization and the Braves fan base, but these types of injuries could linger long-term if he came back too early.

First he was day-to-day, then it was a week, then he was placed on the 15-day DL and now it’s been a month.  BUT finally…he’s beginning baseball activities.  On Sunday he swung a bat for the first time in a month and played catch.

“I went out today (Sunday) and threw and went into the cage and took about 30 swings – I didn’t hit any balls, just dry swings,” Freeman said.  “I started out (swinging) at 50 percent, then went to 75.  I didn’t get to 100, but I got close to 100.  My wrist feels good, but a couple of days ago, probably three days ago, I got an MRI again and I had fluid in my hand.  So we went in there and put a needle pretty deep in the fluid to try to get the fluid out of there, and put two cortisone shots in there.”

Now on Monday, Freeman’s wrist must have felt fine because he was back on the field working out again.  He hit off the tee and two rounds of soft toss at the Braves facility today.

Freeman will likely continue working out over the next few days and go on a minor league rehab assignment soon, but that didn’t stop him from trying to work himself into tonight’s lineup.

Sorry Freddie, but no chance – though I’m sure he was just joking…or was he? Freddie and the Braves are optimistic that he can return to the diamond soon…the Braves could use all the help they can get right now. “Freddie’s going through the rehab, he’s feeling better,” John Hart told reporters.  “We’re going to attempt to get him out and let him start doing a few more things where he can go live, and maybe get him in some games, and then just see where it goes from there.  But there was a level of optimism here in the lastcould of days.” Thanks to Kevin McAlpin for taking a picture of Freddie on the field today taking somegrounders.
