Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer John Smoltz Throws Jab Back at Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine
By Jeff Schafer
Atlanta Braves fans have been very fortunate over the past few years to witness some of their favorites enter Cooperstown and the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Bobby Cox all entered the elite group in 2014 and today it was John Smoltz.
Maddux finished his career with a 355-227 record. He also was an 18-time Gold Glove winner and won the Cy Young Award four times. Glavine finished his career with a 305-203 record, was a five-time 20-game winner and captured the Cy Young Award twice. Glavine also won the Silver Slugger Award four times.

Smoltz entered the Hall with 213 wins and had 154 saves. He’s the only pitcher in history to record over 200 wins and over 150 saves.
Both Glavine and Maddux retired one year ahead of longtime teammate John Smoltz, so Smoltz wasn’t available for Cooperstown until 2015.
During their Hall of Fame speeches, both Hall of Fame newcomers had fun at Smoltz’s expense.
Glavine thanked Maddux at the podium and had a jab for Smoltz “You made me wealthier with all the money we took from Smoltzie on the golf course.”
Maddux, known for being the prankster of the group, threw this jab to Smoltz…“The next seven years were spent winning division titles, watching the kids grow up, and watching John Smoltz’s hairline recede.”
Now with his chance on the stage, Smoltz couldn’t let those guys have the final work.
Smoltz got the upper hand…
“Recently I’ve lost 20 pounds, and they’ve helped me find it.”
Smoltz did recognize Chipper Jones, but failed to do any joking with him since he’ll most likely be on the stage in 2016. He did sum his comments about Chipper with this “Someone steal his Twitter account, that would help.”
There were so many tweets this morning and all afternoon congratulating Smoltz, folks talking about his speech and sharing their memories. Though my favorite has to be a tweet from Peter Moylan.
