Atlanta Braves Fredi Gonzalez Discusses Julio Teheran’s Struggles

The Atlanta Braves lost game two of their series against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday 7-3.  The Braves are now 46-54 in the 2015 season and continue to fall out of contention for both the NL East and a Wild Card spot.

Julio Teheran was on the mound for the Braves as he looked to build off his prior start as he went seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs while totaling 11 strikeouts…but the start was in Atlanta.  Teheran is a different pitcher on the road.  “Different” is the nice word for looking like a Single-A pitcher in the big leagues.

On Tuesday in Baltimore, Teheran threw 33 pitches, 18 were balls and gave up three runs in the first inning.

“His last outing was pretty darn good,” Fredi Gonzalez told reporters.  “Maybe he’s reading or thinking about the road thing…it’s been out there the whole year.  That’s something we have to overcome and help him overcome it.  This year, it’s just one of those things”

“I don’t know if it’s mental, but the number sure show it” Gonzalez said.  “We’ve got to get through it because we can’t pick and choose when he pitches.  We go on a 10 day road trip, what do we send him home for a few days?  So we’ve got to get through it somehow.”

Teheran gave up a three-run homer and a two-run home to Chris Davis in the 1st and 2nd innings.  If you watched Julio’s expressions you could tell he was getting frustrated with home plate umpire Scott Barry.  He wasn’t getting the calls that he thought he should have.

“I think it was just a matter of not getting the pitches,” Gonzalez said after the game.  “There was a couple of pitches in the first couple innings that were kind of – they were balls when we came back up – but they didn’t swing at them, didn’t get the call and he got behind in the count.  He had to throw a lot of fastballs to a pretty good fastball hitting team.  Really, the only guy that hurt him was Chris Davis.  There were some guys on and some guys that hit the ball hard, but he gave up a two-run home run and a three-run home run to Davis.  Pretty much, that was it.”

Teheran lasted only four innings, giving up five hits, five runs and four walks.  He collected four strikeouts and is now 6-6 for the 2015 season.

“His pitch count was high, I was worried about that” Fredi said.  “That’s why he didn’t go back out there in the 5th inning.  Other than that, if we get a call here or there maybe we could have eliminated one of those homers and be a little different ball game.”

Right now, Teheran is scheduled to pitch again on Sunday August 2 in Philadelphia.  The Braves play on Monday at Turner Field…I wonder if the Braves would consider pushing his start one day.
